- "Decided to go after one of Maz's tougher prizes: the Graceful Promising, a derelict Vontorian treasure ship locked in close orbit around a dark star."
- ―Han Solo, Smuggler's Guide
The Graceful Promising was a Vontorian treasure ship. At one point by 10 BBY, it became cracked apart and settled in an orbit around a dark star. The Pirate Queen Maz Kanata eventually stashed a cache of kiirium aboard the starship, which the smuggler Han Solo, assisted by Rebel Alliance Lieutenant Caluan Ematt and a few rebel Pathfinders, successfully retrieved at some point between 0 ABY and 3 ABY. The Graceful Promising and the retrieval of its treasure was documented in the logbook known as the Smuggler's Guide.
History
- "Not a bad bit of treasure hauling from the Grateful Promising [sic], if I do say so myself. Lucky for Ematt that I was able to find a buyer for all that kiirium."
- ―Han Solo, Smuggler's Guide
Maz Kanata noted the location of the Graceful Promising on a map of treasure caches.
The Graceful Promising was a Vontorian treasure ship that became cracked apart[1] at some point by 10 BBY.[2] It settled in a close orbit around a dark star on the eastern edge of the galaxy. The Pirate Queen Maz Kanata eventually stashed a cache of relatively valuable kiirium outfitted with an antitamper sub-space alarm aboard the derelict starship. She marked its location on a map of the treasure caches she had hidden throughout the galaxy that was included in the Smuggler's Guide logbook.[1]
At one point between 0 ABY and 3 ABY,[3] the human smuggler Han Solo acquired the Smuggler's Guide. In order to try and earn funds needed to repay a debt to the crime lord Jabba Desilijic Tiure, Solo decided to try and access Kanata's treasure cache aboard the Graceful Promising, which he considered one of the pirate queen's more challenging caches but nevertheless worth the attempt—an opinion that the smuggler noted on Kanata's map too.[1]
Han Solo (pictured) retrieved Maz Kanata's treasure cache from the Graceful Promising.
Solo recognized the difficulties lying ahead that were posed by the gravitational shear caused by the nearby dark star, however. For the mission to the Graceful Promising he also brought along the Alliance Lieutenant Caluan Ematt as well as a few rebel Pathfinders. The smuggler made an entry in the Smuggler's Guide noting his plans and included an image of the vessel—the name of which he misspelled as the Grateful Promising in one instance—with the entry.[1]
Solo's team successfully retrieved the kiirium from aboard the vessel, with Solo subsequently selling the load and documenting the mission's outcome in the logbook, as well. Later, the book fell into the possession of the Keredian cyborg criminal Cycyed Ock, who, in an annotation made in Solo's entry, expressed regret at being beaten to retrieving Kanata's cache aboard the Graceful Promising, claiming that he knew "a few techniques" of use in such an attempt.[1]
Behind the scenes
The Graceful Promising was introduced in Daniel Wallace's 2018 reference book Star Wars: Smuggler's Guide. The starship was illustrated by Adrián Rodriguez.[1]
