- "If anyone can solve a problem with a few bits of wire and some gimer-gum, it's that girl. Don't underestimate her, Vern."
- ―Douglas Sunvale, to Vernestra Rwoh, on Avon Starros
Douglas Sunvale believed Avon Starros (pictured) was capable of solving a problem with only gimer-gum and a few bits of wire
Gimer-gum was a substance[1] that shared its name with the gimer stick,[2] a cane used by Jedi Grand Master Yoda.[3] While Jedi Master Douglas Sunvale, Jedi Knight Vernestra Rwoh, and the scientist Avon Starros were stationed at the outpost Port Haileap on the Outer Rim planet Haileap during the High Republic Era, Sunvale often told Rwoh that Starros was a genius and that if anyone could solve a problem with only gimer-gum and a few bits of wire, then it was her.[1]
In 232 BBY,[4] Sunvale was killed in an attack by the Nihil pirates, and Rwoh and Starros were among a group stranded on the Outer Rim moon Wevo. While on Wevo, Rwoh realized that she had underestimated the scientist who she had viewed as a gifted child, noting that Starros was more "brilliant" than she and others had known. The Jedi Knight then mentally noted that Sunvale had been aware of the scientist's intelligence, and recalled his statement about Starros and gimer-gum.[1]
Behind the scenes
Gimer-gum was mentioned in the 2021 junior novel The High Republic: A Test of Courage, written by Justina Ireland and published as part of the Star Wars: The High Republic multimedia project's[1] Phase I.[5]
