Generation ships were an ancient class of vessel used to colonize worlds prior to the advent of hyperspace travel. They were massive ships utilizing different compartments for growing food, primary and secondary power generators, living quarters, and entertainment modules. The main purpose of its design was for the primary and future generations to teach their progeny how to run the ship and colonize worlds. The knowledge was passed down until the destination was reached and the colony was established.
History
The Great Generation ships[1] (and later sleeper ships[2]) were regularly launched by the Settled Worlds of the Tython system from the planet Furies Gate during their pre-Republic isolation. These ships attempted to fly through the maze that was the Deep Core and reach the rest of the galaxy.[1]
In the midst of their occupation by Rakata of the Infinite Empire circa 30,000 BBY, ambitious Coruscanti experimented with early "generation ships" that traveled entirely at sublight and took centuries to reach their target destinations.[3] The world of Empress Teta in the Koros system was first colonized before 27,000 BBY by explorers out of Coruscant traveling in the first generation ships, leading to the discovery of carbonite. This carbonite paved the way for sleeper ship colonization instead. [3]
Settlement of the Colonies began via generation ships sent out from the Arrowhead with planets such as Balmorra, Commenor, and the Duros colony of Neimoidia. The wellsprings of the Slice were established by the explorers when colonization depended on generation ships and hibernating colonists.[3] In front of the Hyperspace Navigator's Guildhouse is a Monument to Lost Navigators, a massive carbonite statue of the ancient, unnamed patriarch of the Coruscanti family that allegedly blazed the Koros Trunk Line on a generation ship.[4]
