The Genassa system was located in the Mid Rim's M'shinni sector and contained six planets, including Genassa. Genassa's native sentient M'shinn species terraformed the rest of the system's planets before eventually expanding to other systems. The Genassa system eventually became a part of the Galactic Republic, the Galactic Empire, and the New Republic, before ultimately being conquered by the extragalactic Yuuzhan Vong species.

Description

The Genassa system was a part of the M'shinni sector[1] in the New Territories portion of[2] the Mid Rim.[1] It contained six planets, including[3] the terrestrial[5] world[6] Genassa that was orbited by a large moon.[3]

History

The M'shinn species was native to the Genassa system's planet of the same name.

The M'shinn species was native to the Genassa system's planet of the same name.

At some point, population pressures on Genassa forced its native sentient M'shinn species to colonize outer space, beginning with the construction of orbital biospheres and then proceeding with the settlement of Genassa's moon and the terraforming of the rest of the Genassa system's planets. Eventually,[3] at some point by 3966 BBY,[7] the M'shinni developed a hyperdrive, which allowed them to colonize hundreds of worlds in the M'shinni sector.[3]

Space surrounding the Genassa system was explored by the Galactic Republic between 3000 BBY and 1000 BBY, and the system was situated within the borders of the Republic by the time of the Clone Wars.[2] During the first campaigns of the Clone Wars in 22 BBY, the Ninth Army of the Republic was tasked with engaging the military forces of the Confederacy of Independent Systems in the Genassa system's vicinity.[4] Shortly after the acquisition of the planet Ukio by the Commerce Guild during that conflict, the Genassa system was featured on a galactic map displayed on a viewscreen at a facility run by Passel Argente, the Magistrate[8] of the Corporate Alliance.[9]

The system was incorporated into the territory of the Galactic Empire by 17 BBY.[4] By the time of the Galactic Civil War between the Empire and the Rebel Alliance, starships frequently emerged from hyperspace for navigational calculations in an isolated region of space between Genassa and the Bright Jewel sector planet Ord Mantell.[5] By 13 ABY, the Genassa system had become a part of the Empire's eventual successor state, the New Republic.[4] Fourteen years later, the system had been conquered by the extragalactic Yuuzhan Vong species as part of its invasion of the galaxy. It remained under the invaders' control until 29 ABY.[2]

Inhabitants

Genassa was the homeworld of the sentient M'shinn species.[3] Around 25 ABY, the population of the Genassa system numbered between one and ten billion.[2]

Behind the scenes

The star system containing Genassa was first mentioned in the 1995 West End Games' Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game sourcebook Galaxy Guide 12: Aliens — Enemies and Allies, in an entry authored by Lisa Smedman.[3] The 2009 reference book The Essential Atlas by Daniel Wallace and Jason Fry identified the Genassa system by name and placed it in grid square M-7.[2] The Clone Wars: Act on Instinct, a webcomic authored by Pablo Hidalgo and released on StarWars.com[8] over the span of the 2009[10]2010[11] second season of the Star Wars: The Clone Wars television series,[10] featured the first appearance of the system.[8]

A number of maps of the galaxy published in several Star Wars sources placed the Genassa system on the Celanon Spur.

A number of maps of the galaxy published in several Star Wars sources placed the Genassa system on the Celanon Spur.

In The Essential Atlas, a number of galactic maps depict the system between the Bright Jewel and Ottega systems on the Celanon Spur hyperspace route.[2] That placement of the Genassa system was later repeated in several maps in other sources.[4][12][13][14][15][16] However, in a map of The Essential Atlas focusing on the Genassa system's galactic region, the Mid Rim, it is instead placed a relatively short distance off that segment of the Celanon Spur[2]—a placement that was also repeated in the StarWars.com Online Companion to the book[17] as well as in a smaller-scale map in Jason Fry and Paul R. Urquhart's 2012 reference book The Essential Guide to Warfare focusing on the Genassa system's galactic neighborhood. This article assumes that the placement originating from these latter, more specific maps is correct.[4]

The Essential Atlas depicted several forces traveling through the Genassa system during the Yuuzhan Vong War.

The Essential Atlas depicted several forces traveling through the Genassa system during the Yuuzhan Vong War.

Furthermore, The Essential Atlas depicts the military forces of three galactic factions transiting the Genassa system while traveling along the Celanon Spur during the Yuuzhan Vong War in 25 ABY—namely, New Republic forces and later those of the Imperial Remnant pass through the system while traveling Rimward, and subsequently the forces of the Yuuzhan Vong transit the system while advancing Coreward.[2] Similarly, The Essential Guide to Warfare depicts a Separatist holdout force traveling through the Genassa system while fleeing Coreward in the aftermath of the Ciutric Offensive of the Imperial Reconquest of the Rim in 19 BBY. In line with the prior assumption, this article assumes that, while the abovelisted forces did travel along the Celanon Spur, they did not, in fact, pass through the Genassa system.[4]

Galaxy Guide 12: Aliens — Enemies and Allies establishes that the Skrillings first traveled off-world after the M'shinni had colonized their homeworld Agriworld-2079—which The Essential Atlas places in a star system other than the Genassa system. The Knights of the Old Republic Campaign Guide establishes that Jervo Thalien—whom Knights of the Old Republic 1 depicts as a Skrilling—was chairman of the off-world company Lhosan Industries by the time Taris became a member world of the Galactic Republic. Since The Essential Guide to Warfare dates the latter event to 3966 BBY, the M'shinni must have therefore acquired interstellar travel ability at some point by that date.
