Garu-bears were a species of bear known for protecting their cubs. Because of the Yuuzhan Vong coomb spore diseased that attacked her organs, when Mara Jade Skywalker first learned that she was pregnant with her son Ben she briefly considered medical options of terminating the pregnancy to prevent the disease from attacking her child. When she dismissed the idea almost immediately, it was akin to a garu-bear protecting her cub.[1]
