Unidentified cotton swab species (talk - history - links - logs)
Sorry, Culator, I just cannot tolerate this one. The production image is not a source for canonical information, or we would have to create IU article for this guy as well. And it's obvious that creators of TPM were intending those cotton swabs to represent a crowd of multiple species - not a crowd of cotton swabs. Let's apply some common sence people, that's just silly! MauserComlink 08:21, 21 August 2009 (UTC)

- This is a production shot for record keeping of a VFX effect, not something that's supposed to be canon. The "cotton swab species" makes about as much sense as saying Lamproids are two-foot tall sessile aliens with tubing coming out of their bottoms. jSarek 19:55, 21 August 2009 (UTC)
- I uploaded that image and info because it was an interesting addition to Mos Espa Grand Arena's Bts, not to claim that the objects used to simulate the crowd were an actual species. I do hope Culator was joking when he created the article. Nayayen

- Per jSarek's comments and INAN's description of the context. This is a behind-the-scenes picture, and it seems to me that it can't be taken as in-universe canon. —Silly Dan (talk) 20:21, 21 August 2009 (UTC)

- Honestly, I don't understand how Mauser is being abusive. Sure, his opinion on this matter may differ to yours, but he has neither directed an insult nor tried to bully anyone here as far as I can see. I'm sure he doesn't mean any offence. - The name might be iffy, but the article is sound (I guess the main issue with it would be if they're actually a species or individuals of various species wearing some sort of body suit thing). And per Grae. -- AdmirableAckbar (Talk) 19:26, 21 August 2009 (UTC)

- Does this photo appear with a caption in The Star Wars Vault? If so, what is the caption? —Silly Dan (talk) 19:58, 21 August 2009 (UTC)
- "When ILM was faced with the prospect of somehow making a crowd of hundreds of thousands come alive in the Mos Espa Podracing Arena (left, 1999), it eschewed more complicated digital techniques and painted thousands of cotton swabs on long wooden sticks (below, 1998), stuck them randomly through chicken wire on a miniature set, and made them move with a very high-tech appliance: hair dryers! The scene also included hundreds of tiny toy figures." The picture on the left of the caption is a screenshot from the movie, the picture below it is the one used in the article. -- I need a name (Complain here) 20:10, 21 August 2009 (UTC)
- The only implication that it is a species is from the creation of the article on the basis of the image. They are not even remotely implied anywhere that they are a species. You could make an article like Mos Espa Grand Arena crowd but the image this article is based on would only be used in the Bts. If you used it in the article then you could replace most of the images from RotS with bluescreen and an actor. Nayayen

- Just for clarification, is there anything that actually states that they are a species? If there isn't then that just makes them unidentified objects and we don't have articles for unidentified insignificant objects, such as "Unidentified rock (Tatooine)" or "Unidentified small tree", so that would make the article un-necessary --Jinzler 10:57, 26 August 2009 (UTC)
- They aren't any sort of IU object, they are only shown as the method of representing the crowd in TPM in a reference book (Star Wars Vault). I would assume that if this image appears in some new Essential Guide or something then we can say that they actually were some painted cotton wool on sticks (or species if it said such a thing) that were among the crowd at the Podrace. So to answer your question Jinzler, I am pretty certain they have been stated as a species anywhere; their sole appearance was in the image in the Star Wars Vault and the caption for it (posted by INAN above).
