Hello,

Following this year's events, had some drafting for a proposed update to Wookieepedia:Social Media Team to propose. Thanks to the few people that've helped workshop this a bit.

Draft link

Some highlights to note (if this did pass in full, these changes would effect):

  • Creation of new social media accounts should be approved via Forum:Consensus track for community approval; existing accounts would be grandfathered in and continue existing.
  • More detailed posting guidelines. These give a helpful guideline for day-to-day use for new members, and more importantly, formalizes general acceptable behavior the same way menial admin tasks are still documented on WP:A. These are not saying that posts cannot ever be made for anything not listed; there are some circumstances in which things might be cool to do, but these should be done in moderation and done professionally. if you know what I mean, you know what I mean…
  • Procedure for speaking for the site as a whole (i.e. "Wookieepedia believes/stands for/supports/denounces)"; primarily, officially documenting the practice the current SMT has opted to adopt, which is to, in all reasonable circumstances, not make statements without consulting other team members and/or the rest of the admins. Vacation clause included for clarity; this is lifted from WP:A's administrative autonomy vacation tag/Discord ping wording. This doesn't mean statements can't be made on very rare occasions, it simply ensures that it won't be one person speaking alone, and perhaps without thinking it through.
  • Small note about "clean and professional language"; which is a tldr for avoiding things such as excessive swearing or discussion about nsfw topics off the main account with LFL creators. if you know, you know
  • Though this is also briefly noted in WP:PRIVACY, explicitly defining that Wookieepedia's social media accounts should abide by user privacy regarding not sharing DMs made to and from the accounts unless the other account consents to its release in full (example: File:GregKufera-GrelliCryko.png, in which he gives such consent).
    • That, in the same vein, when making posts about individual Wookieepedians, it may only be when express consent is given ahead of time. It also must require that the person being posted about be informed that they can have the post(s) removed at any time. In the vast majority of cases, it's very easy to ask someone first and they'll say yes, for whatever reason that may be, but we've had enough incidents to where this should be written down.
  • Putting into place that DMs should not be deleted from the site's social media, with the exception of clear spam or nsfw content (as is more and more common on social media platforms nowadays), unless consensus from the SMT is had. This is to avoid what's happened with messages being deleted to remove traces of conversations that would have been helpful to trace back on.
  • Formalizing account management regarding logins: as a duty, logins should be provided to new team members promptly upon promotion, or when a new account is made.

Anyway, would appreciate some thoughts. The goal of the above is to accomplish three main goals: a) protecting editor and LFL creators' privacy and safety, b) giving more power back to the community where possible (CT account creation), or in the cases in which it can't be, adding as much transparency as possible, and c) formalizing login and team management procedures to ensure that the Social Media Team must operate as a collaborative group on Wookieepedia's behalf instead of working harder on our own, which will bolster our image while remaining professional.—spookywillowwtalk 05:30, 24 September 2024 (UTC)

Discussion

  • With everything that has happened this year, I think the proposal covers most, if not all, of the issue. Nice job! Bonzane10 Bonzane10-Sig 10:10, 24 September 2024 (UTC)
  • Looking good to me. One small thing: I notice (and understand why) the bit about updating the existing social media accounts when a new account is created is added to the list of things to periodically update, but might it make sense to nevertheless also mention that on the list of things to do when a new account is created? • Fair point, added a line briefly about linking the new account on existing ones, if that's what you meant.—spookywillowwtalk 01:28, 25 September 2024 (UTC)
      • Yeah, that works. Imperators II(Talk) 05:46, 25 September 2024 (UTC)
  • All makes sense to me. Just to note, point 2 under "Posting content" has an unnecessary "the" in "to better represent the Wookieepedia's interests." Zed42 Wolfpack emblem (talk) 02:23, 25 September 2024 (UTC)
    • Sorted, thanks!—spookywillowwtalk 03:07, 25 September 2024 (UTC)
  • Excellent work, spooky. I have single comment though, regarding the last point of "Posting content": "Content created and released on Wookieepedia's social media platforms [...]". I understand that it is mostly to address potential issues with the intellectual property of content posted on social media, and I think it could use to be clearer in that regard by clearly stating that any content (except when sharing stuff from others like official images, fan made images, etc.) is the intellectual property of Wookieepedia, and that Wookieepedia retains full ownership and copyright after departure of any members of the SMT. • Sorry for the delayed reply; had to ask someone on the Fandom end about copyright phrasing. Revised the point; was advised that since pretty much a lot of what we post is LFL-owned, the last part was needed. It's phrased as content created for, not necessarily posted; which also is helpful for gaining access to content that may have been in-preparation to be posted but not quite out yet, which was another issue we ran into this last time around.—spookywillowwtalk 01:49, 7 October 2024 (UTC)
      • Perfect, thanks. NanoLuukeCloning Facility 15:06, 11 October 2024 (UTC)
  • Did a full review, and as a SMT member, I love this. This will bring a lot more structure and security to the accounts and ensure we are presented in a professional manner and are held accountable when that doesn't happen. • Great work, no notes. Tommy-Macaroni (he/they) 09:30, 3 October 2024 (UTC)
  • I'm just thinking about this now, but I think the policy should also include another responsibility (under "Point of contact") regarding Discord and VIPs, since the SMT has the option to invite creators to our Discord. NanoLuukeCloning Facility 08:43, 18 October 2024 (UTC)
