Towing a stray thought here from Discord. Currently, the |mat= and |pat= fields exists. I'd like to suggest we slot a |head= field (or something such of that sort) for a gender-neutral head of the family parameter. The template does qualify as widely-used given how many pages its on, so thought to tow it to SH for thoughts then afterward tp CT/bot run if passed. Template code left below to better visualize:
