Several parts:

  1. Weird admins-can-give-out-mod-unilaterally cleanup and associated rules.
  2. General cleanup.
  3. Change diff can be found here where the proposed alterations are pretty clear and it serves as a succinct tldr for those who don't wish to read. I've, however, expounded on each tweak a bit below for clarity, separated by that they're mostly in three general "groups" of suggestions.

WP:DISCORD reads:

"Administrators may grant server moderator status to non-administrators in channels as circumstances merit, but non-administrator moderators must submit to the direction of administrative operators in issues of channel management."

I remember this being a thing back in the IRC days (that admins could +o to op someone at will) if ever needed… It certainly isn't used nowadays, and I dislike the notion that an admin could unilaterally just give server moderation perms to someone. We also have a much wider and stable admin team present on Discord for all timezones, so I think we should just remove this wholesale.

"Discussions moderators have certain moderation privileges, particularly in those channels open to unverified users."

I'd like to propose changing this to:

"Discussions moderators maintain certain moderation privileges and announcement permissions on the server. Bot operators may also be granted additional permissions, such as message deletion capabilities, in bot request related channels."

Reasoning being that at this point, DMods do maintain their moderation permissions in all channels; it's been operating this way for years, though policy hasn't caught up. Isn't like the permissions are going to be abused or anything, and the moderation privileges aren't full ones, but they do have some and that should be reflected clearer. And then finally, bot operators can delete messages in #bot-requests; isn't new. We normally archive them too now, but there's also a lot of usability to be had in allowing them to delete when they need to, as that doesn't always work. Logs are kept of deletions, so even then if something is accidentally deleted, admins would see that.

Top of the page reads:

"Wookieepedia's Discord server exists primarily to foster communication and cooperation between Wookieepedians rather than being a general Star Wars chat."

I'd suggest a small tweak to make it a touch more friendly. Also, we do chat a lot more casually there then we used to, and the older culture of "the channel is only for business" has long-since faded, I think?

"Wookieepedia's Discord server exists to foster communication and cooperation between Wookieepedians, allowing the community to discuss both site matters and serve as a general Star Wars chat for the site's community.

Bottom of the page reads:

"WookieeNights are semi-regular video watch parties where editors can relax and get to know one another in a less formal setting."

Per the WookieeNights CT, these aren't just watch parties and often aren't, in practice. As such:

"WookieeNights can be hosted for many purposes, not limited to but including watch parties, collaborative editing sessions, Q&A events, and general hangout sessions to allow editors to get to know one another in a less formal setting."

Discussion

  • I agree with both changes. Hell, for the latter we quite honestly have always been kinda casual in discussion, even when the majority of users in the server were active editors. - Thannus (DFaceG) (he/him) (talk) 05:05, 5 May 2024 (UTC)
  • These changes make sense to me. (also, just noting, there's a typo in the link to the bots page) Zed42 (talk) 07:24, 5 May 2024 (UTC)
    • Oop, fixed.—spookywillowwtalk 14:02, 5 May 2024 (UTC)
  • Damn, editors will no longer be able to relax at WookieeNights Good changes. Imperators II(Talk) 07:56, 5 May 2024 (UTC)
  • The discussions channels already serve as general chats outside of editing, so good to update the policy as well. Rsand 30 (talk) 17:41, 5 May 2024 (UTC)
