"…SH SH SH!—"

—OOM, several nights ago encouraging me to contribute to our open pile of SH and CT threads.

Hello there! Riding the coattails of the massive amount of new SH and CT threads active at this time, let’s talk collaboration! This is an idea that Fred and several others have brought up a few times, and it’s a great one. What if we had a channel on Discord, where admins and editors from other wiki communities could come together with us? Where we could share tips and tricks, spitball ideas, and just in general help grow our respective communities through teamwork and collaboration?
Historically, we have always leaned away from collaborating with other sites, at times to our detriment. We have sometimes treated it like we knew best, and could not learn anything from others, something Tope especially ingrained in the site. While there are still signs of this here and there to this day, we now know this is wrong. That we can learn so much from how others operate, and that sometimes even we can make mistakes.
This is why I bring forward the idea of a dedicated channel on Discord, named something like Wiki-partnerships or something along those lines. This could take the form of either a channel accessible to everyone or something requiring some sort of manual verification. This could be as simple as an admin verifying the user in question is indeed an active member of another community, or whatever form the community feels it should take. I would note though, that I believe a more informal, less rigid approach would be more beneficial for this as opposed to strict activity requirements. I will note as well, that I do not intend for this to give everyone who joins this channel access to the rest of the server, such as the main Wookieepedia channels. For that, they would still need to meet our verification requirements. This would be a one-off channel that those editing other sites could request access to.
There is so much we can learn from other sites. From the problems they have faced, and the challenges they’ve overcome, to how they help integrate new users. The possibilities are endless. On the flipside, we can also share the mistakes we have made, to help others avoid making the wrong choices we have over the years. In many cases, these will be people who have been on the platform for well over a decade, and to put bluntly have seen some poodoo.

So, what do you think? Supreme Emperor Holocomm 05:29, 19 March 2024 (UTC)

  • I fully support this. I've had help from other wikis in my research for Wook multiple times, this is going to encourage a more open environment and discussion between different communities which also makes things easier for us. Wikis are built on communities, so it makes perfect sense to collaborate with others. Bonzane10 Sabine Starbird (holonet) 06:50, 19 March 2024 (UTC)
  • Yeah, good idea. Imperators II(Talk) 08:19, 19 March 2024 (UTC)
  • This should be fine to just include in the @Verified role (which only requires a fandom account). Works for me. NBDani TeamFireballLogo-Collider(they/them)Yeager's Repairs 11:29, 19 March 2024 (UTC)
    • I was thinking that editors from other wiki could use a new role like "Collaborator" or something along those lines to make identification and/or tagging purposes easier. Bonzane10 Sabine Starbird (holonet) 12:43, 19 March 2024 (UTC)
      • Yeah that sounds like the best way to go. OOM 224 (he/him) 20:32, 12 April 2024 (UTC)
  • I love this, excellent idea. IIRC we had some good connections with other wikis on Twitter, back when I was posting on that account, so if that's still the case that might be a good place to promote such a channel. Tommy-Macaroni (he/they) 13:53, 19 March 2024 (UTC)
    • Indeed, and there are a few following our lead with things like supporting their fan communities! Supreme Emperor Holocomm 04:35, 5 May 2024 (UTC)
  • It makes total sense to have a mechanism to allow for collaboration and cross-wiki idea sharing. ThrawnChiss7 Mitth symbol Assembly Cupola 14:57, 19 March 2024 (UTC)
