For over a year now, I have been privileged with CheckUser abilities granted to me by Wikia. CheckUser is a tool which allows site administration to track users' IP addresses in order to prevent abuse of multiple accounts. There are many applications, but on Wookieepedia I use CheckUser typically to see if someone that the admins get an inkling about might in fact be a banned former user. You know, such as someone obsessing over Manaan-related articles or Gavyn Sykes. Because of the privacy issues involved, CheckUser is not granted widely to users, with zero or one users—aside from Wikia staff—on a typical wiki possessing the tool. Also, Wikia keeps track of how the tool is used by its possessors.

It should be fairly obvious by now that Wookieepedia is not one of my main activities at this point in time. I'm not going to hide behind a blanket statement of "real life" because I am smart enough to realize that Wookieepedia is real life, as much as working or carrying out personal relationships or watching baseball is. I have been among the most active Wookieepedians at several points in my nearly four years on this site, but there are lapses in my usership due to multiple factors, and the summer and autumn of 2010 are turning out to be such a lapse. Often times when I do visit IRC, I am met with requests for CheckUser to be run on suspicious individuals, and I am left feeling like my absence is hurting this site's ability to quickly deal with unwanted interlopers.

Grunny, a Wookieepedian of several years, as well as an administrator and bureaucrat, is also trusted by Wikia to perform countervandalism and anti-spam duties across the greater site. He doesn't have interpersonal conflicts with anyone, period. There is really nothing indicating that Wookieepedia, and Wikia, should not be able to entrust CheckUser to Grunny as well, in order for someone more active on the site to have the abilities. If this CT garners enough support, I plan to e-mail the Wikia Community Team with a link to this forum in order to request that Grunny be given the tool.

While I typically disagree with requests for third options not to be added to vote threads, I feel compelled to say that votes outside of yes/no will be met with considerable apprehension. Finally, CheckUser is the real deal. It's nothing to play with, so a considerable amount of thought and discussion among administrators went down before Grunny was selected as the candidate.   3. Heck yes. Hell, for a while now, I was under the impression that he already had those powers. He's here every night in the late-night hours, he'd be a valuable asset with those options during that time, as often I see bots, socks, and proxy users pop up. So, a definite yes from me.   14. Grunny has been the de facto point man at the administrative/bureaucratic level for several months now. He's consistently here doing most of the heavy lifting, and as Grae points out, he does so quietly and responsibly. I've been given no reason to think he would misuse this power.
