With the upgrade to MediaWiki 1.19, the way category pages are displayed has changed. Previously, although subcategories, pages, and files were displayed separately, they were all sorted together, and only 200 from all three groups combined were shown on the page at once. This necessitated the decision made in Forum:CT Archive/Subcategorization consistency almost three years ago, where it was decided to prefix all subcategory sort keys with a space to ensure that they were listed before pages and files.
Now, MediaWiki has fully separated subcategories, pages, and files from each other in displaying category pages. The system sorts and displays 200 of each on the page at the same time fully independent of the others. This means that 200 subcategories may be shown from A to R at the same time 200 pages are shown from A to F and files from A to Z. Additionally, each one pages separately and individually. Examples of this new behavior can be seen at Category:Battles of the Galactic Civil War and Category:Unsourced quotes. This effectively renders the reasoning behind the decision in the aforementioned CT moot.
I propose to change subcategorization procedures so that the normal method of sorting is . This removes the space from in front of the sort key to allow the software's alphabatizing headers to work. This would not be a hard rule, and different sort keys could still be used if the situation warrants. —MJ— Training Room Tuesday, June 26, 2012, 19:04 UTC
[[Category:Abcxyz|{{PAGENAME}}]]
- Amendment 14:15, July 13, 2012 (UTC): INAN has pointed out that the use of {{PAGENAME}} is in fact not necessary, as MediaWiki automatically strips the namespace from subcategories before sorting them (which was the only purpose of using {{PAGENAME}}. Therefore I am amending the proposal to simply state that the normal method of subcategorization is the category by itself with no sort key (
[[Category:Abcxyz]]), unless the nature of the category warrants a non-standard sort key. I will notify everyone who has voted shortly. —MJ— War Room Friday, July 13, 2012, 14:15 UTC
