The result of the debate was: Include borders in cover images. Grunny (Talk) 03:26, September 18, 2009 (UTC)
A decision needs to be made on whether book covers that include a border on one or more edges should have that border included in the image of the cover. The most prominent example of this are the WotC Saga Edition sourcebooks. Every one of these sourcebooks (not including the core rulebook) contains a narrow black border on both the left and right sides of the cover. I saw Mauser crop this border out of File:Scum and Villainy.jpg in recent changes and asked him about it on his talk page, resulting in this discussion. My opinion is that the black border is part of the cover and therefore should be part of the image, which should display the entire cover from edge to edge, while Mauser disagrees. The options here are to either include or not include such borders, plain and simple.
Reasons to include the borders:
- They are technically part of the actual cover, and I feel the images here should display the entire cover.
- By cropping them out, we are presenting a modified version of the cover, which might jeopardize our already shaky fair use claim. (Think about quotes, which must be verbatim including any errors.)
Reasons to not include the borders:
- They can distract from the cover art itself, which I would guess is what most people looking at the image are more interested in.
- It would be easier since all of the SE sourcebook cover images currently have no borders, meaning that deciding to include the border would require re-scanning and re-uploading each and every one.

Include borders in cover images
- Per "reasons to include" above. —Master Jonathan(Jedi Council Chambers) 22:52, 28 August 2009 (UTC)
- How is this not obvious? The articles on the books should be represented by accurate depictions of their covers. If the borders are on the covers, then the borders should be on those depictions. jSarek 01:23, 29 August 2009 (UTC)
- The infobox is for an image of the cover, not the cover art. The image of the cover should include the ENTIRE cover, including the black borders. At the same time, I agree with Culator on the "Meh-ness" of this CT. Darth Trayus

- The covers are square. The images should be, too. Dangerdan97 15:23, 31 August 2009 (UTC)

- I agree with the "meh-ness" also, but the cover is the cover. That said, the existing files should not be forcibly rescanned just for the sake of adding the borders back without making sure they are of the same or better quality. — Fiolli {Alpheridies University ComNet} 17:17, September 1, 2009 (UTC)
- Meh. Just represent the cover -- not only whatever portion of the cover includes art. Not that we really need to go back and add borders in, but there's no need to crop any out. Havac 23:19, September 1, 2009 (UTC)

- I agree with the meh-ness as well, but this makes simply the most sense. We also don't remove the fact that Anakin Solo became Darth Caedus from the article just because we don't like it. The same applies to the cover images: We don't like the border, but it's canon. Pranay Sobusk ~ Talk 20:51, September 12, 2009 (UTC)
Do not include borders in cover images
- I don't think that even requires a CT. MauserComlink 23:01, 28 August 2009 (UTC)

Discussion
Refraining from voting at this time. But I'd like to point out that as Mauser stated on his talk page, the actual cover art by the artist is square. The black border on the left is over the crease/spine of the book and the right black border is merely to balance the left one out. I'm pretty sure we don't show the spine crease on any other book, it would get cropped out. Plus, if you look at the cover as displayed here the border is brownish, yet on the book sitting in front if me, it is very much black. Therefore, if there is discrepancy on the border color, then just crop it out. That's how I'm leaning. - JMAS Hey, it's me! 02:11, 29 August 2009 (UTC)
- Small point of correction: the art is slightly rectangular on most of the books, and it's the borders that make the image square. Also, both the Star Wars Roleplaying Game Saga Edition Core Rulebook and The Force Unleashed Campaign Guide have art that extends the full width of the covers, if consistency is a consideration. Dangerdan97 23:34, 31 August 2009 (UTC)
- Addendum: The Core Rulebook cover image is still the incorrect promotional cover, as evidenced by the incorrect author credits listed on it (and more importantly, that author credits are on the cover at all).
It also looks as if both it and the Force Unleashed cover image has been cropped, even though they have no borders.Dangerdan97 23:47, September 1, 2009 (UTC)
