Following the more or less unanimous support for allowing bots to operate on userpages, I am bringing this to the Consensus Track. Currently, rule 9 of Wookieepedia:User page and profile policy reads:

No user or bot may edit another user's user page or subpage without their express permission. This includes maintenance edits, such as fixing redlinks or redirects, but does not apply to the addition of {{Inactive}} or administrative removal of inappropriate content.

This rule was implemented at the February 2021 Mofference. The inability of bots to edit userpages has led to unnecessary maintenance issues, such as userpages filling up maintenance categories, including automatically populated ones. Prior to 2021, it was common for bots to edit userpages just like any other wiki page. While explicit permission can be granted, there is no standardized method for doing this and thus bot operators tend to explicitly exclude the entire user namespace when doing bot runs. I presented two solutions in the SH:

  • Option 1 - opt-out: an invisible template named {{BotsNotWelcome}} (or similar) would be created, and bots would be barred from editing any userpage tagged with this template. This allows maintenance edits while still letting users opt out if they desire.
  • Option 2 - opt-in: this is what we currently do, but a template like {{BotsWelcome}} would be used as a standardized OK for bots. The downside of opt-in is that not everyone will be aware of the template, and users who no longer edit will obviously not be able to add this template.

Given there was support for both alternatives, this CT thread will consist of two votes:

  • Vote 1 will approve or reject the modification of WP:USER rule 9
  • Vote 2 will determine if option 1 or option 2 is selected. This vote requires vote 1 to pass.

This vote is a simple plurality vote, where the alternative with most votes wins. This vote is only valid if vote 1 passes.

Rule 9 of Wookieepedia:User page and profile policy will be changed to read:

  • Option 1: No user may edit another user's user page or subpage without their express permission. This includes maintenance edits, such as fixing redlinks or redirects, but does not apply to the addition of {{Inactive}} or administrative removal of inappropriate content. Bots are allowed to make routine maintenance edits unless the user has opted out by placing the {{BotsNotWelcome}} template on their user page or user subpage(s).
  • Option 2: No user may edit another user's user page or subpage without their express permission. This includes maintenance edits, such as fixing redlinks or redirects, but does not apply to the addition of {{Inactive}} or administrative removal of inappropriate content. Bots are allowed to make routine maintenance edits if the user has opted in by placing the {{BotsWelcome}} template on their user page or user subpage(s).
