Currently, as I'm sure we are all well aware of through the CAN process, the Layout Guide requires that articles with less than 165 words not be split apart into subsections. I am proposing that we provide an exception in the case of out-of-universe products. This topic came up in the Discord server a few days ago when I submitted BB-8 and the Snow Monster for a comprehensive article nomination.

In the case of books, we have had an informal format of splitting articles up into sections that feature the Publisher's summary, Media (editions, ISBNs, covers), and more. While BB-8 and the Snow Monster is definitively less than 165 words, it would do a disservice to the reader to cram all the disparate information into a single paragraph. As such, I'm proposing that add this additional sentence to the Layout Guide's section on introductions:

  • Articles shall only have an introduction section if the article body reaches 165 words in length, not counting the "Behind the scenes" section or any other content (infobox, captions, quotes, etc.). Such articles will then employ sectioning in the article body. However, out-of-universe products, such as books or comics, may have an introduction if the article body is less than 165 words.

Additionally, (as a separate vote), I suggest that we add the following language to the guide on the Comprehensive article nominations page:

  • …provide an introduction that gives a good summary of the topic if the article reaches 165 words, not counting the "Behind the scenes" section (not including captions, quotes, headers, etc). Conversely, an article must not have an introduction if it is less than 165 words (with the exception of out-of-universe products), not counting the "Behind the scenes" section.
