Flitterbats were a type of bat with broad wings. They could be found on the ecumenopolis Coruscant and in the first year of the Empire's reign after its formation[1] in 19 BBY,[2] Senator Mon Mothma saw several broad-winged creatures that she thought might be flitterbats clinging to the underside of a pedestrian bridge in the Federal District of the planet and tucking themselves away for morning. Moments later, Mothma caused the detonation of a speeder near the bridge in order to kill the Separatist assassin Soujen Vak-Nhalis. As the blast knocked her to the ground, her final thoughts before falling unconcious were hopes that she had caused the explosion swiftly enough to spare the flitterbats and pedestrians on the bridge from its effects.[1]
Behind the scenes
In the current Star Wars canon, flitterbats were mentioned and potentially appeared in the 2025 novel Reign of the Empire: The Mask of Fear, which was written by Alexander Freed as the first instalment of the Star Wars: Reign of the Empire trilogy.[1] The bats originated in the Star Wars Legends continuity, where they appeared in "Lure of the Lost," a 2015 bonus adventure for Fantasy Flight Games' Star Wars: Force and Destiny roleplaying game that was written by Jordan Goldfarb, with Daniel Lovat Clark and Chris Gerber.[3]
