- "Yes, I know you don't have lungs."
- ―Chalan Talosi, to WAC-77
WAC-77, or "Wack," was a pit droid created on the planet Ojom. The repair droid had a black photoreceptor and brown and tan plating. It served with the Besalisk pilot Javlin on her freighter, along with the Twi'lek mechanic Chalan Talosi. When the Black Sun criminal syndicate caused a fire to break out on the freighter's engines, WAC-77 worked with Talosi to extinguish the flames but negotiated with Talosi to receive desired upgrades.
Biography
Life with Javlin
- "That's right, they were running the wrong current for anything built off Ojom, including you."
- ―Chalan Talosi, on WAC-77's power outlets.
The Black Sun (emblem pictured) chased a freighter that WAC-77 was aboard.
Manufactured on the planet Ojom[1] by Serv-O-Droid, Inc.,[2] WAC-77, also known as "Wack," was a DUM-series pit droid that served aboard the freighter of Besalisk pilot Javlin before Twi'lek mechanic Chalan Talosi joined the crew. After Talosi joined the crew, the Twi'lek corrected the power outlets on board to properly function with the pit droid. At some point, the freighter's engines caught fire while fleeing from the Black Sun criminal syndicate. WAC-77 came into the engine room in alarm, twirling its head and frantically waving its arms.[1]
While Talosi did not understand the fast-talking droid, the whiny tone conveyed its meaning. She instructed WAC-77 to quit crying and extinguish the fires. After receiving slower clicks from WAC-77, Talosi confirmed her knowledge that WAC-77 did not have lungs but reminded the droid that she was the only one reliable to perform maintenance on it, alluding to the starship's power outlets before her. WAC-77 whirred in response, and Talosi confirmed that the power outlets had previously run an incorrect current for the droid. The droid responded by spraying chemical propellant onto the fire, before a new explosion rocked the starship and turned off all the lights.[1]
Saving the day
- "Listen, Wack. I'm going to blow the hatch. The atmosphere will rush out and the fire will starve. Then I can talk you through the repairs."
- ―Chalan Talosi
As Talosi made her way to the cockpit to investigate the issue, WAC-77 stayed behind. While Talosi was away, the fire grew, prompting the pit droid to panic. In the cockpit, Talosi formulated a plan to remove the ship's rear hatch, exposing the inside to the vacuum of space to starve the fire of oxygen, and then to guide WAC-77 through repairs to the engines. Talosi returned to find the droid futilely panicking as the fire grew. She explained her idea to WAC-77, who argued for more upgrades. The Twi'lek relented, agreeing to install advanced limb hydraulics that WAC-77 wanted.[1]
Chalan Talosi and WAC-77 rested against a quad-laser cannon.
With the agreement in place, WAC-77 dutifully took its position next to the console while Talosi prepared the hatch. Then the Twi'lek returned to the copilot's seat and pulled up her comm. She checked with WAC-77 that it was bolted down and, once confirmed, counted down before blowing the ship's rear hatch. Some time later, Talosi and WAC-77 sat together against a quad-laser cannon.[1]
Characteristics
- "Yes, I can see why you'd think now is a good time to negotiate for upgrades. Fine."
- ―Chalan Talosi, on WAC-77's negotiation during an emergency
WAC-77 was a 1.19 meters[3] tall repair droid.[2] Its dome featured a black photoreceptor and two antennas. The droid's body was covered with brown plating, but its arms, legs, and the edge of its head had tan plating. It did not speak Galactic Basic, but understood it. As a droid from Ojom, WAC-77 required a specific current from power outlets. It was an opportunistic droid, negotiating for upgrades during an emergency. During a panic, the droid spoke fast.[1]
Behind the scenes
WAC-77 was introduced in Special Modifications, a 2016 roleplaying sourcebook for Fantasy Flight Games' Star Wars: Edge of the Empire. The droid was featured in a short story and accompanying art.[1]
