- Qui-Gon Jinn: "The plasma explosion's still external? Get us within ten klicks, immediately."
- A navigator: "You can't get any closer to that thing. You'll fry yourself and everyone else on this ship!"
- Qui-Gon Jinn: "Not if we act quickly."
- Obi-Wan Kenobi: "You heard my Master. Take us in."
- ―Qui-Gon Jinn, a navigator, and Obi-Wan Kenobi upon encountering a struggling soulcraft[1]
Field lasers were lasers that could dispel plasma fire. In 40 BBY, the Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn and his Padawan, Obi-Wan Kenobi, used the lasers to assist a soulcraft that had been attacked by a plasma bomb above the Inner Rim planet Pijal. Though they began cutting through the plasma fire, a starship—which they later learned was the Meryx—fired an antiplasma charge and doused the flames.
Description
A type of handheld laser, field lasers could dispel plasma fire caused by plasma bombs. They emitted a thin, white beam when activated.[1]
History
- "We're approaching the soulcraft, Master."
"All right. Seal up." - ―Obi-Wan Kenobi and Qui-Gon Jinn, preparing to use field lasers to dispel plasma fire
During the Republic Era, field lasers were kept aboard a Consular-class cruiser operated by the Galactic Republic.[1] In 40 BBY,[2] the cruiser was sent to transport Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn and his Padawan, Obi-Wan Kenobi, to the Inner Rim planet Pijal to mediate the signing of the upcoming Governance Treaty initiative.[1]
Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi used field lasers to aid a soulcraft attacked by blackguards.
As they entered the Pijal system and approached Pijal, the cruiser encountered a struggling Pijali soulcraft vessel that had been attacked with a plasma bomb by Pijali blackguard soldiers, who were secretly operating under the orders of Pijal's Princess Fanry to derail the treaty's signing ahead of her coronation. Jinn ordered the ship's navigator to stop so they could assist, donning a space-suit alongside his Padawan and obtaining the cruiser's field lasers. Once floating in space, the Jedi pair cut through the sickly green haze of glowing plasma fire with their field lasers, sending small blobs of it floating away from them as the soulcraft started an emergency descent. As Jinn worked, he noticed a second plasma fire on the other side of the soulcraft and mentally bemoaned how useless his field laser would be to combat it.[1]
However, before the Jedi Master could move toward the second fire with his field laser, a starship darted forward and fired an antiplasma charge, dispelling the flames. Afterward, the struggling soulcraft was brought safely aboard the Czerka Corporation cruiser Leverage and delivered to Pijal. In the Pijali palace, the Jedi were informed that the Opposition—a performance troupe known for protesting the Governance Treaty—were seemingly responsible for the attack; in reality, the troupe was being used as a scapegoat for the blackguards' attacks throughout the Pijal system. Later, Jinn and Kenobi learned that the starship that had fired the antiplasma charge—thus ending their work with the field lasers—had been the Meryx, operated by jewel thieves Rahara Wick and Pax Maripher.[1]
