Ethersquid

The ethersquid was a type of squid that was one of the things for which Gyndine, a planet^[1] of the Expansion Region's Circarpous sector^[3] with forests and lakes on its surface,^[4] was known for. It was a deadly creature^[1] that could endanger starships over Gyndine,^[5] and it had suckers that left marks comparable to those left on the body of^[2] the Human bounty hunter^[6] Boba Fett after he had emerged from the stomach of a sarlacc^[2] arthropod^[7] on^[2] the Outer Rim Territories planet^[7] Tatooine.^[2]

In the aftermath of the Battle of Gyndine,^[5] an engagement fought as part of the invasion of the galaxy by the extragalactic Yuuzhan Vong species in 25 ABY,^[8] a team of Yuuzhan Vong aboard a ship in orbit over Gyndine were assisting with pacification efforts there. A Yorik-vec assault cruiser of Domain Yaght, a rival of the team's own Domain, led a group of ethersquids to attack the other ship, which eventually crashed on Gyndine.^[5]

Behind the scenes

The ethersquid was first mentioned in "The Ordeal of Boba Fett," a short companion narrative included in Michael Allen Horne's Dark Empire Sourcebook, which was published in 1993 by West End Games for use with Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game.^[2]

"I, Yuuzhan Vong," a roleplaying source article written by Daniel Wallace and published in the eighth issue of the Star Wars Gamer magazine^[5] on December 21, 2001,^[9] included an adventure seed for use with Wizards of the Coast's Star Wars Roleplaying Game. The scenario suggests that the player characters' starship is brought down onto Gyndine either due to the damage by ethersquids or due to a ranged attack by the Domain Yaght cruiser. This article assumes the scenario plays out as described.^[5]
