"Some miners think they found a vein of essurtanium. I've never actually seen it before—supposed to have really rare properties, maybe even a little Force-reactive. I was hoping to buy a sample, bring it back here so I could study it."
―Indeera Stokes, at the Elphrona Outpost[1]

Essurtanium was a substance with rare properties, potentially including Force-reactivity, a vein of which was believed to have been found by miners on the planet Elphrona in 232 BBY. Jedi Knight Indeera Stokes, who was stationed at the planet's Jedi outpost, planned to fly to the discovery site and obtain a sample of the substance; however, the plan had to be scrapped due to news of an ongoing Nihil raid on a local homestead.

Description

Essurtanium was a substance that purportedly exhibited particularly rare properties, potentially including a measure of reactivity to the Force.[1]

History

Indeera Stokes was interested in studying a sample of essurtanium.

Indeera Stokes was interested in studying a sample of essurtanium.

At one point in 232 BBY,[2] a group of miners in the southern hemisphere of Elphrona, an Outer Rim Territories planet the surface of which was dominated by mountain ranges of iron and other ferrous minerals, believed they had discovered a vein of essurtanium. Information about the miners' claim reached[1] Jedi Knight[3] Indeera Stokes, who was stationed at the planet's Jedi outpost.[1]

Wishing to acquire a sample of essurtanium—which Stokes herself had never seen—to bring back and study, the Jedi Knight informed the other Jedi present at the outpost of her intent to take one of their Vector starfighters to travel to the discovery site. Shortly thereafter, however, that plan was canceled when the Jedi at the outpost received information about an ongoing raid by the Nihil marauders on the Elphrona homestead of the Blythe family.[1] Three years later,[4] Jedi Master Harli Cogra wrote a book titled Chronicles of the Jedi, which detailed the Jedi of the High Republic Era. In the book, Cogra noted Stokes' interest in studying the properties of essurtanium.[3]

Behind the scenes

Essurtanium was first mentioned in the 2021 novel Light of the Jedi, written by Charles Soule as part of the Star Wars: The High Republic multimedia project's[1] Phase I.[5]

  4. Star Wars: The High Republic: Chronicles of the Jedi establishes that the in-universe book Chronicles of the Jedi was written weeks after the destruction of Starlight Beacon, which Star Wars: The High Republic Character Encyclopedia dates to 230 BBY. The issuing of the Guardian Protocols, dated by The High Republic Character Encyclopedia to 229 BBY, are depicted in The High Republic – Shadows of Starlight 1 as taking place one week after Starlight Beacon's destruction. With this, Chronicles of the Jedi must have been authored no earlier than 229 BBY. Chronicles of the Jedi further establishes that Pra-Tre Veter is still a Grand Master of the Jedi Order, meaning it was written before his death, which The High Republic Character Encyclopedia states took place in 229 BBY. Therefore, Chronicles of the Jedi must have been written in 229 BBY.
