A listening post of the Galactic Empire was concealed within the icy rings of Esseles during the Galactic Civil War.[3] Following the Battle of Endor and the transformation of the Alliance to Restore the Republic into the New Republic, New Republic Defense Fleet forces targeted the listening post in a strike on Esseles in an attempt to draw out the ISD Overseer. The strike succeeded, destroying the listening post and baiting the Overseer in an ambush at the Zavian Abyss.[1]
