Emm'jai was a Besalisk smuggler and infrequent customer of Unkar Plutt. Some time in 28 ABY, she visited Niima Outpost looking for Plutt, but the junk boss was offworld at the time and had left a 13-year old Rey in charge of his trading stand. Emm'jai, refusing to take Rey's directions to wait until the next day for Unkar's return, persuaded her to allow her inside. She regaled Rey with tales of the legendary smuggler Han Solo, before offering the child some dried nuna. Rey took notice of the droid Emm'jai had brought with her, a cobbled-together hybrid known as HLE-3, or "Ellee". Part of Emm'jai's family for several generations, Ellee had been retrofitted and rebuilt many times using outdated and scavenged parts, and Emm'jai was hoping to acquire an old pre-war Imperial converter from Unkar to power her old friend back up. Rey, fascinated by the droid, offered to help get HLE-3 operational, slipping her small hands into the cherished droid's interior and working until she was able to get the droid's converter to half power. Overjoyed at having her droid back, Emm'jai left Rey with the rest of the dried nuna and other food packets and fruit. Her kindness gave Rey hope, and allowed her to finally have a restful night's sleep.[1]
