Ecologists were first mentioned in the current Star Wars canon via Nexus of Power.

The occupation of ecologist was introduced in the current canon of the Star Wars franchise in the 2016 sourcebook Nexus of Power, published by Fantasy Flight Games for use with the Star Wars: Force and Destiny roleplaying game system.[2] An ecologist, Kell Tolkani, subsequently appeared in the short story "A Naturalist on Hoth," which was written by Hank Green and published in the 2020 anthology From a Certain Point of View: The Empire Strikes Back.[3]

In the Star Wars Legends continuity, ecologists were introduced via Galaxy Guide 4: Alien Races, a 1989 sourcebook authored by Troy Denning for use with West End Games' Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game.[4] The ecologist Plett then made a full appearance, albeit as part of a vision, in the 1995 novel Children of the Jedi by Barbara Hambly.[5] Finally, Lisa Smedman's roleplaying adventure "Little Empires," published in the 1996 West End Games supplement The Kathol Outback,[6] featured the first illustration of an ecologist, Chandra Hobat.[7]
