E-5KL was a protocol droid owned by the explorer Frelka during the Galactic Civil War.

Following the Battle of Yavin, Frelka and E-5KL visited the Bright Jewel system. They resided in Tansarii Point Station, a space station that they used as a starting point to explore Station Gamma, an asteroid base nearby.[2] In 1 ABY,[4] Frelka and E-5KL flew out to Station Gamma to get treasure but they realized that the station had been taken oven by the Rak'qua, a tribe of aggressive Nautolans. While exploring, Frelka ran into a member of the Rak'qua, the pair fought and Frelka lost causing him to flee the station back to Tansarii, in his haste leaving behind E-5KL.[2] Frelka later met a spacer who he asked to head back to Station Gamma and find his droid for him.[1] The spacer then traveled to Station Gamma where E-5KL told him of Frelka's defeat and asked the spacer to kill the Rak'qua Aphotic who humiliated Frelka. The spacer did so and returned to Frelka to inform him of te death of his foe and the safety of his droid. However, Frelka reluctantly thanked the spacer as he wanted to have kept his defeat a secret and ungratefully claimed he might scrap E-5KL.[3]

Behind the scenes

E-5KL was a non-player character in the 2003 video game Star Wars Galaxies, a massively multiplayer online roleplaying game developed by Sony Online Entertainment and published by LucasArts,[1] prior to its closure on December 15, 2011.[5] E-5KL was added to the game as part of the "New Player Tutorial," introduced with the release of the "Publish 25," a.k.a. the "New Game Enhancements," on November 15, 2005.[6]

Furthermore, in the game Ruwan Tokai references the destruction of the Death Star as having occurred one year earlier, and Strongholds of Resistance also places the events of Galaxies' Chapter 9: "The Fury of Exar Kun" in 1 ABY. Lastly, while Chapter 11: "The Battle of Echo Base" features the Battle of Hoth—dated to 3 ABY by The New Essential Chronology—the developers have stated that the portrayal of that battle in the game is intentionally anachronistic. Therefore, the events of Star Wars Galaxies must span from 0 ABY to around 1 ABY.
