"E chu ta!"
"How rude!"
―E-3PO and C-3PO[3]

E-3PO, mockingly referred to as E-Gregious by Imperial support teams, was an E-3PO protocol droid in the service of the Galactic Empire. Known for his gruff manners and vulgar demeanor, E-3PO's true allegiances lied with IG-88's Droid Army, a droid supremacy collective that had infiltrated the galaxy. Following the Battle of Hoth, the protocol droid acted as a liason between Imperial and Ugnaught technicians on Cloud City during the Empire's hunt for the Millennium Falcon.

Biography

"Boba Fett has gone to the garbage recycling level. Han Solo has not yet arrived, although moments ago our perimeter scanners reported a ship matching the description of the Millennium Falcon entering the system. It appears to have some hyperdrive damage."
―E-3PO to IG-88B[2]

E-3PO was constructed on the manufacturing world Mechis III during the Imperial Era. Unbeknownst to the organic population of the galaxy, the planet had been taken over by a quartet of rogue IG-88 assassin droids that utilized Mechis III's droid factories to produce an army. Programmed with upgraded sentience, these droids, E-CPO among them, were sent off into the galaxy and told to operate as expected until the time was right to begin the Droid Revolution.[2]

Attached to Death Squadron, E-3PO was transported to Cloud City in 3 ABY to serve as translator liaison with the colony's Ugnaught engineers during the hunt for Luke Skywalker.[4] When IG-88B arrived on Bespin to capture Han Solo and stop Boba Fett from getting the bounty on the smuggler, E-3PO acted as his informant, supplying the assassin droid with a detailed map of the facility before continuing about his reular business.[2]

Unhappy with his situation on Bespin, E-3PO believed the Empire was bent on destroying him by forcing him to work with a culture specialized in the disassembly and reprocessing of salvageable droids and droid parts. The Imperial team helping the Ugnaughts convert the carbon freezing chamber's chemical intermix ratio for Human hibernation took to calling E-3PO "E-Gregious" because of his outlandish attitude. Insulted, he left the chamber,[1] taking time only to mumble "E chu ta!" to C-3PO standing outside the door, who commented on his rudeness.[3]

Characteristics

E-3PO was known to be arrogant, rude, and vulgar.[4] However, when faced with any pushback to his attitude, the droid would become offended.[1] IG-88B attributed E-3PO's brusque behavior to the successful sentience programming the protocol droid had undergone on Mechis III, though the assassin droid worried that his spy was perhaps too uncouth, to the point of potentially arousing suspicion among organics.[2]

Behind the scenes

E-3PO was portrayed by Chris Parsons in Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back, who also portrayed 4-LOM and K-3PO in the same film.
