"Hey, I know a Dewback-oil salesmen when I hear one." - ―Hondo Ohnaka and Kay Vess
Dewback-oil was a type of oil that that shared its name with dewbacks, a type of reptile.[1] Around 3 ABY,[2] the scoundrel Kay Vess dismissed the pirate Hondo Ohnaka as a "Dewback-oil salesman" for promising her a whole planet if she helped him escape from the brig in the Rokana Raiders base located in the Sayma Nebula.[1]
Behind the scenes
Dewback-oil was mentioned in the "Brave the Unknown" quest of the "A Pirate's Fortune" expansion for the Massive Entertainment video game Star Wars Outlaws,[1] which was released on May 15, 2025.[3] The term "Dewback-oil salesman" is akin to the out-of-universe term "snake-oil salesman" meaning a fraudulent or deceptive individual.[4]

Per narrative director Navid Khavari's comments, the game's "A Pirate's Fortune" DLC chronologically occurs immediately after the end of Outlaws's main events, meaning the DLC must have taken place around that year.
