"Dantooine. They're on Dantooine."
Leia Organa[2]

This Dantooine base was one of the the first bases used by the Alliance to Restore the Republic after the signing of the Corellian Treaty in 2 BBY and was located on the planet Dantooine. Safely evacuated prior to the Battle of Yavin, it was later reused but intended only to be a temporary base for the Alliance.

History

The Rebel base

"An old Rebel base can be found in the northwest corner of Dantooine. It was supposedly abandoned when the traitors making up the Rebel Alliance opted for a new and, one would assume, better base of operations. My belief is that there are still Rebels making use of the base. Maybe not many, but some."
Lieutenant Sabol, to a spacer[4]

The Rebel base on Dantooine was established early during the Galactic Civil War. It was used as the primary headquarters of the Alliance High Command after the base on Orion IV was abandoned[5] during Operation Strike Fear in 1 BBY.[6] In order to protect the facility, a less concealed decoy base was built on the other side of the planet Dantooine to lure the Empire away.[7] The Rebel headquarters on Dantooine was commanded by General Dodonna.[5] Units assigned to the base at that time included Dantooine Squadron, a starfighter squadron led by Garven Dreis,[8] and a Y-wing squadron commanded by Davish Krail.[9] Other Rebel personnel stationed at the base included Tigran Jamiro[10] and Ryle Torsyn.[9]

The Jedi Drakka Judarrl, a survivor to the Great Jedi Purge, came to hid on Dantooine after she discovered the establishment of the Rebel base on the planet. She then organized raids against the Empire with the help of the local Dantari.[11]

In 1 BBY, the Alliance planned to hold Darth Vader hostage here, after he had been captured on Kamino, unaware that Boba Fett was pursuing the Rebels and their valuable hostage in his ship.[12]

At the time of the Destruction of Alderaan, in 0 BBY, Princess Leia Organa revealed Dantooine base's existence to the Empire when she was captured.[2] Fortunately, the Imperial survey team soon only found the decoy base on the other side of the planet[7] and confirmed that it had been abandoned and was not the current Rebel base as she had claimed.[2] However, before long, just prior to the Battle of Yavin, the Alliance really abandoned its base on Dantooine[5] when Ryle Torsyn of Gold Squadron discovered an Imperial tracking device[13] in the cargo of a vessel docking there.[14] As a result, all personnel was evacuated in one day's time[10] and was relocated to the Great Temple on the moon Yavin 4.[5] The Rebel agents Dusque Mistflier and Finn Darktrin would later be send to the abandoned base to recover a datacron containing sensitive information about Rebel sympathizers that was lost during the evacuation.[14]

Eventually, the discovery of the decoy base by the Empire allowed the real Rebel base to not be compromised. After the Battle of Yavin, the Rebel Alliance was in search for a permanent base. As the Empire considered the Rebellion had abandoned Dantooine, the Rebels were able to return safely to Dantooine and reuse their abandoned base as an emergency base.[7] In 1 ABY,[15] Mon Mothma and Admiral Ackbar temporary settled in the base, where they both employed loyal spacers to fulfill a number of missions and tasks against the Empire.[16] Vortex Squadron also used the base as its headquarters during the same period of time.[17] Around the same time, an Imperial agent working for Lieutenant Sabol finally discovered and explored the Rebel base on Dantooine while seeking documents containing information about the location of a high-ranking Rebel officer that the Empire wanted assassinated.[4]

Later history

"I was just showing Gantoris some images of Dantooine. We are considering moving the refugees from Eol Sha to our old base there."
―Leia Organa Solo[3]

In 11 ABY, the base was used by the New Republic to relocate refugees from Eol Sha.[3] However, the colony was soon completely destroyed by Imperial Admiral Natasi Daala.[1]

Behind the scenes

"We have re-established this emergency base after the Empire located our decoy base on the other side of Dantooine."
Ackbar, about the Rebel bases on Dantooine[7]

This Rebel base on Dantooine was first mentioned in the movie Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope.[2] The base later appeared or was mentioned in several Star Wars media, including novels, source books and video game.[1][5][12] Eventually, the video game Star Wars Galaxies established that the Rebel base discovered by the Empire on Dantooine in A New Hope was in fact not the real base but a decoy intended to lure the Empire away, justifying the use of the Dantooine base in the game.[7]

  15. The opening crawl of Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided dates the game to after the events of Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, and additionally, Serji-X Arrogantus, who died in Star Wars (1977) 10—the events of which The New Essential Chronology dates to 0 ABY—appears in the game. Therefore, at least a portion of Star Wars Galaxies must be set in that year. Furthermore, in the game Ruwan Tokai references the destruction of the Death Star as having occurred one year earlier, and Strongholds of Resistance also places the events of Galaxies' Chapter 9: "The Fury of Exar Kun" in 1 ABY. Lastly, while Chapter 11: "The Battle of Echo Base" features the Battle of Hoth—dated to 3 ABY by The New Essential Chronology—the developers have stated that the portrayal of that battle in the game is intentionally anachronistic. Therefore, the events of Star Wars Galaxies must span from 0 ABY to around 1 ABY.
