The RPGA, alternatively known as the Role Playing Game Association and the RPGA Network,[2] is a subsidiary of Wizards of the Coast that organized sanctioned Star Wars tournament scenarios for the West End Games d6, and the later Wizards of the Coast d20, RPG systems. Founded in November 1980 by Frank Mentzer of TSR, Inc., Wizards of the Coast acquired the RPGA when they purchased TSR in 1997. In 1994, the Network was headed by Jean Rabe,[3] having taken over from her predecessor, Penny Petticord.[1]

Prior to running the Living Force and Dawn of Defiance campaigns[4] the RPGA—operating as TSR, Inc.—ran the Star Wars: Warriors of the Republic campaign, designed for the Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game, Second Edition, Revised and Expanded rules.[5]

Daniel Wallace acknowledged an attempt to track down obscure RPGA star systems. Those star systems created by authors who had received an author credit for other licensed Star Wars material were included in 2009's The Essential Atlas.[6]

On January 28, 2010 it was announced by Greg Yahn, the Director of Marketing for Wizards of the Coast that Wizards' would not seek to renew the Star Wars license with Lucasfilm, and it would lapse in May of that year. Citing "economic downturn", the license to produce all of the company's Star Wars brand lines would be discontinued.[7][8] RPGA™ Network-sanctioned tournament scenarios were therefore notably absent from 2010 onwards but RPG scenarios did eventually return to the Gen Con Game Fair in 2013, sponsored by Fantasy Flight Games.

Tournament scenarios

Known primarily for the tournament scenarios released as part of the Living Force campaign, the RPGA had previoulsy released a number of convention tournaments tied to the Star Wars: Warriors of the Republic campaign as well as numerous standalone tournaments at conventions often listed simply as a Star Wars Feature prior to release and confirmation of the tournament scenarios' title. These sanctioned RPGA Network tournaments were sent to West End Games/Lucasfilm for approval.[1][9]

Initially, under TSR, Inc., members of the RPGA were required to pay a $25 annual subscription[2] which included a subscription to Polyhedron as well as the ability to access tournament scenarios, but the fee was later waived by Wizards of the Coast having initially reduced the fee to $20.[10] Tournament scenarios remained only available to members and gamemasters, primarily distributed at conventions only before being made available online.[11] The two orderable categories of tournaments were Star Wars Game and Living Force.[12] At the start of 2001, individual scenarios were priced at $10 for event coordinators.[13]

"First and foremost, any tournament sanctioned by the RPGA Network goes through an editing process designed to catch rules violations, iron out problems with the storyline, match the characters to reasonable challenges and provide something for each type of player...The RPGA Network works in concert with the companies that produce their sanctioned game systems. They send tournaments to the respective companies to make certain that the rules, atmosphere, and spirit of the game in question are all satisfactory. This process allows the companies to approve the tournaments that represent their games, and it assures players that they are playing the game they expect to be playing and not some weird hybrid or in a game world they don’t recognize."
