A current insulator was a circuit that would absorb and channel ion build-up. They could be installed in starships and be used to protect a ship's cargo from ion energy.[1]
In 3 ABY,[2] the scoundrel Kay Vess paid a starship mechanic two thousand credits and supplied them with twenty Cargo signature scramblers in order to install a current insulator in the hold of the Trailblazer, her EML-850 light freighter. This upgrade allowed her and her companion ND-5 to more easily smuggle ionized cargo for the Miyuki Trade League.[1]
Behind the scenes
Current insulators appeared as an upgrade in the "A Pirate's Fortune" expansion for the Massive Entertainment video game Star Wars Outlaws,[1] which was released on May 15, 2025.[3] In the expansion, players could purchase the "current insulator" upgrade to reduce the ion build-up their ship would received while their ion cargo was unstable.
