Cortex bombs were specialized bombs used as kill switches for sentient beings. They used a series of tiny explosive charges wired to an implanted individual's brain, that would detonate when a specific trigger code was seen, heard, or spoken. Cortex bombs didn't deal any damage to the surrounding area, and dealt very little discernible damage to the implanted individual. They cost 1,200 credits on the market and were used as last-resort measures to keep agents from breaking under interrogation.[1]
Behind the scenes
Cortex bombs were first mentioned in the new Star Wars canon in Cyphers and Masks,[1] a 2018 sourcebook for the Star Wars: Age of Rebellion roleplaying game published by Fantasy Flight Games.[2] They originated in the Star Wars Legends continuity, where they first appeared in Star Wars: The Old Republic, a 2011 massively multiplayer online role-playing game that was produced and released by BioWare.[3]
