The concessions concourse was a disc-shaped building in the Mos Espa Grand Arena on the planet Tatooine. Located on the cliff above the amphitheatre used for the arena, it consisted of two stories and a tower, with debtors cells built beneath the structure. Fans entering the arena were encouraged to visit the concourses, where they could place bets, purchase souvenirs, visit exhibitions, or test drive scaled down podracers, in rooms such as the Gambling Hall, Trophy Room, history of podracing exhibition, and Bo Charmian Racing School.
Description
The concession concourses was a gray, disc-shaped building that was a part of the podracing Grand Arena in the city of Mos Espa on the planet Tatooine. The structure sat directly behind the arena citadel on top of the cliff overlooking the natural ampitheatre in which the arena was built. A small dome sat on top of the flat, circular roof of the concessions concourses and a second dome with a tower rising from it was built on the edge of the roof.[1]
The main concession concourses structure consisted of two stories, with a Gambling Hall located in a room curved along atleast a quarter of the outside wall of the second story, with a room split by a mezzanine floor adjacent to the hall toward the center of the building. The lower floor of this room was used as a race viewing gallery with large screens, while the mezzanine housed the history of podracing exhibition.[1]
On the lower floor of the concessions concourse, the Bo Charmian Racing School was located in an arched room that ran along the outer wall beneath the Gambling Hall. An arched Trophy Room was located beside it toward the center of the building, with steps leading down to holding cells used for debtors benath the building. The tower that rose from the concessions concourses was atleast three stories tall and contained the Grand Stairway running up over atleast three floors and a series of private deal-making rooms on the highest floor.[1]
History
The concessions concourses was in use by the Boonta Eve Classic podrace held[1] in 32 BBY.[2] At that time, the Hutt crime lord Jabba Desilijic Tiure controlled betting at the arena, and once fans had made their way inside, Hutt-controlled managers would "urge" them to visit the concourses. Customers in the building could place bets, purchase souvenirs, visit exhibitions, or test drive scaled down podracers, with many would be podracers getting their first taste for the profession within the concourses, often while smashing up stalls and exhibits in the process. During the Boonta Eve Classic, a large number of individuals spent time inside the concessions concourses, with a Bantha-II cargo skiff and a speeder parked on the roof of the building.[1]
Behind the scenes
The concessions concourses first appeared in the 1999 prequel trilogy film, Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace.[3] In the current Star Wars canon, it was identified in the 2016 reference book Star Wars: Complete Locations. The identification was part of material reprinted[1] from the 2000 reference book Inside the Worlds of Star Wars: Episode I, which was written by Kristin Lund, illustrated by Richard Chasemore and Hans Jenssen, and marked the first identification of the building in the Star Wars Legends continuity.[4]
