"Command Decision" was a short story written by Timothy Zahn, originally published in Star Wars Adventure Journal 11 by West End Games in November 1996 and later archived online at Hyperspace.
Plot summary
The story begins with Admiral Thrawn, Commander Parck, and Captain Dagon Niriz voyaging beyond the boundaries of charted space aboard the Imperial I-class Star Destroyer Admonitor. Some of the ship's senior staff are wary of Thrawn's alien background and mysterious history. While posing as a colony ship, they encounter an alien convoy of the Ebruchi, led by an enigmatic alien named Creysis.
When Thrawn allows the Ebruchi captain to capture a TIE fighter as well as an Imperial shuttle crew, Imperial general Haverel believes the Admiral has gone too far and tries to forcibly stop him in an attempt mutiny. Though he is skeptical of Thrawn, Captain Niriz refuses to go along with the sedition, and Thrawn soon reveals his true intentions. The Ebruchi's “captures” were merely calculated ruses to gauge enemy strength and lull the aliens into a false sense of superiority. His objectives achieved, Thrawn wipes out the Ebruchi space vessels.
