The bordoks were a vaguely equine herbivore native to the forest moon of Endor. They were used by Ewoks as pack animals and mounts when tamed. Bordoks were very sure-footed and, in spite of their size, capable of carrying very large loads.

Lesser bordoks

Lesser bordoks

Forest dwelling[4] Bordoks were medium-sized, pony-like animals best known as Ewoks employed them as beasts of burden,[6] although similar creatures existed on many planets throughout the galaxy.[3] Bordoks had long manes, gentle features, and strong backs.[1]

Although somewhat similar in appearance to horses, bordoks were not true equines. They had upward-curving horns that were short on young females but could grow larger on an adult male.[3] Bordoks also had split hooves that helped them climb through the trees of their arboreal home.

There were two species of bordoks: The lesser bordok grew to no more than 1.5 meters tall at the shoulder. The rarer greater bordok could reach twice this size. Both species were fairly intelligent, and were not startled easily. However, they did instinctively become more skittish at night due to the various nocturnal predators that stalked the moon's surface.[3]

Some have been known to show a remarkable amount of intelligenge, enough to cause scientists to begin readdressing the level of their sentience.[1]

Domestication

Borsoks made strong ties to their owners and were often considerated part of the family.[1] Adult bordoks were extremely protective of their young and, when domesticated, over their master as well.[3] Herding instinct was so strong that adult males sometimes sacrificed themselves for the good of the herd, fighting predators while the others escaped. Young bordoks were commonly taken as pets and often developed lifelong bonds with their owners. Princess Kneesaa a Jari Kintaka had a pet baby lesser bordok named Baga.

Bordok bath toys[7] were available in the galaxy.[8]

"Bordok feathers" was an Ewok phrase that was used to express contempt for a foolish thought or idea.[9]

The Ewoks of the Gondula tribe kept a herd of bordoks in a pen in their Southern Ewok Lake Village.[10]

Behind the scenes

Bordoks made their first appearance in Wicket Finds a Way: An Ewok Adventure, a 1984 children's book written by Melinda Luke and published by Random House.[11] Their first appearance as toys was in the brief toy line Wicket the Ewok made as part of Kenner Prescholar.[12]
