"The most foolhardy or insane risk passage through Gedder's Pass, Black Rock Passage, or near the space-bending singularity known as the Maw in an attempt to shave time and meandering distance off their run."
―Police Commissioner Exantor Divo, Scum and Villainy: Case Files on the Galaxy's Most Notorious[3]

Black Rock Passage was an area of space located in the Akkadese Maelstrom,[3] a region of the Outer Rim Territories[1] and the Slice[2] consisting of ionized gas, dust clouds, water vapor, ammonia,[3] and planet-sized[4] carbonbergs as well as gravity wells. Starship pilots leaving the planet Kessel, which was situated inside the Akkadese Maelstrom, sometimes attempted to find shortcuts to decrease the travel time needed to exit the Maelstrom that would otherwise be spent on the meandering[3] official[5] hyperspace route known as the Channel.[6] Black Rock Passage was among several such potential alternate routes, with New Republic Police Commissioner Exantor Divo characterizing the pilots risking travel through there as either "foolhardy" or "insane" in his[3] 34 ABY[7] book Scum and Villainy: Case Files on the Galaxy's Most Notorious.[3]

Behind the scenes

Black Rock Passage was mentioned in the 2018 reference book Star Wars: Scum and Villainy: Case Files on the Galaxy's Most Notorious, authored by Pablo Hidalgo.[3]

Therefore, 8011 C.R.C. must have been around 34 ABY. Scum and Villainy also mentions Hosnian Prime as still being capital of the New Republic, meaning the in-universe Scum and Villainy: Case Files on the Galaxy's Most Notorious must have been published prior to the destruction of the planet, which Star Wars: Timelines dates to 34 ABY. As the publishing must have occurred between the time of the latest entries and the destruction of Hosnian Prime, it therefore also took place around 34 ABY.
