Barium liquid was a product served hot alongside roast Smapp at Dex's Diner, the Besalisk chef Dexter Jettster's restaurant on[1] the Core Worlds[2] planet Coruscant. The meal cost 8.5 credits and was served on Zhelldays as one of the two options for lunch and dinner Pantoran Plate Specials.[1]

Behind the scenes

"Note: In the cool winter periods, a hot barium liquid accompanies this dish quite nicely."
―A recipe for a Smapp-based dish[3]

Barium liquid was first mentioned in the 1993 book Monsters and Aliens from George Lucas, a publication that combines creature designs and photographs from various projects of George Lucas, creator of the Star Wars franchise, with original text by Bob Carrau. In the book, the product is mentioned in an in-universe recipe that suggests pairing a dish made out of a Smapp creature with hot barium liquid during cool winters.[3] Lucasfilm employee Leland Chee, who maintains the Holocron continuity database, has indicated that information contained in Monsters and Aliens from George Lucas is non-canonical with respect to the Star Wars Legends continuity.[4]

In 2009, barium liquid was introduced into Star Wars Legends canon via "Dining at Dex's," a Hyperspace-exclusive StarWars.com article that was written by Gregory Walker.[1] In the real world, barium is a chemical element and metal with a melting point of 727 degrees Celsius (1,341 degrees Fahrenheit) that, in nature, is always found in the form of chemical compounds. All soluble barium compounds are toxic to mammals, whereas the insoluble barium sulfate is used as a radiocontrast agent in X-ray imaging of the human gastrointestinal tract.[5]
