Arleil Schous was an aging mercenary from the planet Af'El. On the planet Tatooine, he was one main contacts for the Alliance to Restore the Republic and was regarded as a leader of the alien community of the city Mos Eisley. In 0 BBY, Schous visited Chalmun's Spacesport Cantina in Mos Eisley and sat in a booth with the patrons Bom Vimdin, Pons Limbic, Hem Dazon, and Braconnor Bakiska. The group visited when the moisture farmer Luke Skywalker and the Jedi Obi-Wan Kenobi sought passage to the planet Alderaan.
Later, around 1.5 ABY, Schous attended the cantina while it was recorded live by the Imperial Ruling Council for live broadcast as part of the holodocumentary Life on Tatooine. The mercenary sat at a table in the cantina when he was threatened by the Abyssin Cyceyed, who was removed shortly thereafter by the bouncer Tork. When a curfew was placed on the Tatoo system by the Galactic Empire, the nighttime bartender Ackmena attempted to get the patrons of the cantina, including Schous, to leave. Schous eventually left while Ackmena preformed her song "Goodnight, But Not Goodbye."
Biography
Alien leader and mercenary
Arleil Schous was an aging mercenary.
The Defel male Arleil Schous was an aging[2] mercenary[4] who hailed from[1] the planet[5] Af'El.[1] He was one of the Alliance to Restore the Republic's main contacts on[2] the planet[4] Tatooine and was widely regarded as a leader of the alien community in the[2] Tatooine spaceport city[6] Mos Eisley.[2] At some point in his life, Schous had lost the ability of warping light[2] around himself and becoming hard to view.[1]
In 0 BBY,[7] Schous visited Chalmun's Spaceport Cantina in Mos Eisley and sat in a booth with the Advozse smuggler Bom Vimdin,[8] Siniteen patron Pons Limbic,[9] Arcona scout Hem Dazon,[10] and the male patron Braconnor Bakiska.[11] The group visited the cantina when the[3] Human moisture farmer Luke Skywalker and the Jedi Obi-Wan Kenobi came and sought out a pilot to take them to the planet Alderaan.[3] Schous moved to a booth closer to the bar and met with the Pacithhip[10] scout Ketwol[12] and the Devaronian[10] Kardue'sai'Malloc over a jigger of Merenzane Gold.[10] Schous and Kardue'sai'Malloc turned to stare[10] at the altercation between Kenobi and the criminals Ponda Baba and Cornelius Evazan after Evazan threw Skywalker into a table[3] near the Defel's booth.[10]
Cantina curfew
Ackmena attempted to get her patrons to leave the cantina.
Around 1.5 ABY,[13] Schous visited Chalmun's Spaceport Cantina when the Imperial Ruling Council took live footage of the establishment for the holodocumentary Life on Tatooine. The footage was broadcasted to the Kashyyyk system. While the[14] nighttime bartender[15] Ackmena tended to the cantina, the Defel sat with the[14] Abyssin Cyceyed,[16] who produced a knife[14] and threatened Schous.[16] Cyceyed was forcibly removed from the cantina by the[14] bouncer Tork,[17] letting out a high-pitched scream while being handled.[16] Shortly after, a curfew was placed on the Tatoo system by the Galactic Empire after activities from "subversive forces." Ackmena attempted to get her patrons to leave the cantina but was unsuccessful.[14] Two individuals—the Stennes Shifter Trinto Duaba and Karude'sai'Malloc—entered[16] the cantina after the latter threatened Ackmena with a blaster pistol. The two walked over to and sat with Schous.[14]
Schous, alongside Duaba, Kardue'sai'Malloc, and other patrons, then took part in a successful protest to stay in the cantina, getting Ackmena to let them stay for one more round on the house. When Ackmena sang her song "Goodnight, But Not Goodbye", Tork served the trio at the table drinks and the group toasted together. Schous left the two at the table and exited the cantina before Ackmena finished her song.[14]
Personality and traits
Schous had brown skin, brown hair, and red eyes.[3]
Equipment
While in Chalmun's Spaceport Cantina[3] in 0 BBY,[7] the Defel mercenary[4] wore a tan jacket.[3] While visiting the cantina[14] around 1.5 ABY,[13] Schous wore a red jacket over a cream-colored shirt.[14]
Behind the scenes
His famous scene when his eyes glow red in the dark was replaced by Melas, due to George Lucas' wish. However, Arleil may still be seen in the background behind Hem Dazon's introductory shot. "Arleil Schous" is an anagram of Charles Louis (Kallenbach), a Decipher employee. The character's mask was previously used for the obscure 1974 Halloween live show "In the Attic", with Rick Baker in the costume. In A New Hope, Schous is portrayed by Kim Falkinburg.[18]
Schous was first given his name[2] in 1998[19] with the release of the Official Tournament Sealed Deck for the Star Wars Customizable Card Game produced by Decipher.[2]
