- "The annual Sarapin Flight Show was held this week. The famed 85th Fighter Wing impressed millions of spectators with a display of ultrasonic precision aerobatics. The event has already led to a spike in applications for the Imperial Academy."
- ―Dorna Parros, HoloNet News
The 85th Fighter Wing, or simply the 85th, was a renowned fighter wing within the Armed Forces of the Galactic Empire that was active by 3 ABY. The 85th participated in the annual Sarapin Flight Show, impressing millions of spectators and leading to a wave of applications for the Imperial Academy. In 4 ABY, 204th Imperial Fighter Wing's losses led pilots Ganem Kahi and Jeela Brebtin to speculate from which unit their new recruits would be transferring from, incorrectly theorizing they were from the 85th.
Description
The 85th Fighter Wing was a unit of the Imperial Starfighter Corps. As such, starfighters[1] and pilots were part of the fighter wing's composition.[2]
History
- "Where do you think they pulled the pilots from?"
"The 85th, perhaps?" - ―Ganem Kahi and Jeela Brebtin
Jeela Brebtin (right) speculated that Squadron Five's new recruits were from the 85th.
The 85th Fighter Wing was active during the Imperial Era and participated in the annual Sarapin Flight Show[1] in 3 ABY.[3] The 85th's fighters performed a display of ultrasonic precision aerobatics, impressing the millions of spectators and causing a spike in applications to the Imperial Academies of the Galactic Empire. The 85th's participation in the event was covered later in the week by reporter Dorna Parros on the HoloNet News.[1]
In 4 ABY,[4] when Squadron Five of the 204th Imperial Fighter Wing lost two of their pilots, the Empire assigned Imperial cadets Bansu Ro and Rac Syrmo to fill the empty places in the squadron. When the cadets arrived on a Quasar Fire-class cruiser-carrier used by the 204th, Flight Officer Ganem Kahi asked Senior Lieutenant Jeela Brebtin, both of Squadron Five, where the new members might have been pulled from. Brebtin incorrectly speculated that they might be from the 85th. Squadron Five commanding officer Teso Broosh was angered to learn they were cadets instead.[2]

- "Double-checked with our resident lore-master associate narrative director @johnbjorling that this is absolutely the case!"
- ―Navid Khavari on if the 85th Fighter Wing in Outlaws was a reference to the 85th from TIE Fighter 4
The 85th was mentioned in the fourth issue of the 2019 comic miniseries Star Wars: TIE Fighter. The issue was written by Jody Houser and published by Marvel Comics[2] on July 17, 2019.[6] The full name of the 85th Fighter Wing was provided in the 2024 Massive Entertainment video game, Star Wars Outlaws.[1] Navid Khavari, narrative director for Outlaws, confirmed with associate narrative director John Björling that the 85th in TIE Fighter 4 and the 85th Fighter Wing in Outlaws were the same.[5]
