Zophis crystals were a type of kyber crystal located on the Outer Rim Territories planet Zoph. Long before the Clone Wars, fought between the Galactic Republic and Separatist Alliance, Padawans of the Jedi Order traveled to the Outer Rim world in search of Zophis crystals, in desire of constructing their personal lightsabers. While capable of easily carving through durasteel plating, Jedi who used the crystals discovered that the produced blade had devastating and unstable capabilities due to the unique, resonating properties from them.[1]
However, as[1] the Unknown Regions[2] planet Ilum and its kyber crystals grew in prominence to the Jedi Order, Zophis crystals and their use began to decline. Later, by the Clone Wars,[1] between 22 BBY and 19 BBY,[3] Zoph fell under Separatist control, with travel to the planet becoming hostile for Jedi. By the conflict's time, though, some lightsabers still utilized Zophis crystals, but were extremely rare, valuing at 11,000 credits.[1]
Behind the scenes
Zophis crystals were introduced in Rise of the Separatists, a 2019 supplement to Fantasy Flight Games' series of Star Wars Roleplaying products.[1]
