The YG-4210 was an ancient ship model built by the Corellian Engineering Corporation, first constructed more than two centuries prior to the Galactic Civil War.[2]

History

The YG-4210 was originally designed for space exploration, and was capable of very long voyages. The standard configuration was designed to carry a year's supplies for a crew of two, but missions lasting several years were possible, assisted by reliable on-board systems.[2]

Nonetheless, YG-4201s came to be used in a wide variety of different roles. The class was part of the endlessly adaptable YG-series, which introduced CEC's modular hull architecture. The wider series included diverse configurations such as freighters and passenger transports as well as exploration ships, and the individual vessels were designed to be customised on the production line to match their owner's specific requirements, and then endlessly modified to extend their service and perform whatever new role was required of them.[1]

Over the centuries, the number of YG-4210s declined, and because of their adaptability, there came a point where none of the ones that remained in use matched the original specifications.[1][2] Individual vessels were employed in roles as diverse as small passenger transports and armed patrol ships.[1] Eventually, most surviving ships of the type were converted into small freighters on the Outer Rim.[2] If an unmodified YG-4210 was ever discovered, it would be regarded as a valiable prize by connoiseurs of ship design.[2]

The YG-4210 was a relatively small ship, a couple of dozen meters long.[1] It had an old-fashioned appearance, quite different from later Corellian freighters - the main hull was trowel-shaped, with a cockpit pod perched on top, docking hatches at the sides, and a boarding ramp underneath. A small link section led back to a trio of drum-shaped engines at the stern.[2]

However, the adaptability of the design led to variations in appearance. The stock design grouped its engines in a trefoil configuration.[2] But the long-lived YG-4210 known as the Aeon Ranger had been refitted with the engine section of an YG 5000, which had its three drive nacelles in a straight line across the stern with a circular sensor antenna on top.[1] A ship used by Wyl Tarson when working for the crime lord Raze in 0 ABY had its engines spaced along a wider rear wing, and a small square antenna on top.[3]

Similar variation was also evident in the armament. In stock configuration, the YT-4210 carried a twin light laser cannon in a turret on top of the hull.[2] However, this mounting was frequently used instead for a pair of ion cannons.[1] A twin blaster mounting on the side of the bows was also typical.[1] Sometimes, two such mountings were carried, one on each side.[3]

More unusual modifications were also found. The Aeon Ranger had been modified to carry a single heavy concussion missile, firing aft to assist with escape from hostile pursuers.[1]

Internally, the accommodation aboard a YG-4210 was spacious, offering a level of old-fashioned civility for a small crew, or it could be adapted to carry up to twelve passengers.[1] There was also a large cargo hold, originally intended to carry supplies for the crew on extended voyages.[2]

Behind the scenes

The YG-4210 was created for the article "A Legacy of Starships" in the second issue of the Star Wars Gamer magazine, written by Owen K.C. Stephens, illustrated by Jeffery Carlisle,[1] and published by Wizards of the Coast in February 2001.[4] The ship later appeared in the sixth issue of the comic book series Star Wars: Rebellion, which was written by Brandon Badeaux and Rob Williams, illustrated by Michel Lacombe, and published by Dark Horse Comics[5] on May 16, 2007.[6]
