Wupiupi coin

Wupiupi coin

«Are you going to pay for that? It costs seven wupiupi.»
Gragra, to Jar Jar Binks[1]

The wupiupi was a type of golden currency used by the Hutts on the planet Tatooine. On one of their sides, wupiupi coins bore an old Huttese code of trade.[2] Sixteen wupiupi coins constituted one trugat, and sixty-four of them was worth one peggat. The value of a single wupiupi coin was approximately 0.625 Republic credits.[3][4]

Around the time of the Invasion of Naboo, large amphibians called gorgs were sold in the Mos Espa Market for seven wupiupi apiece,[1] which was considered a princely sum.[3]

Behind the scenes

"And speaking of the prequels, Obi-Wan [Kenobi] happens to be the very first show that we've actually featured wupiupi."
"That's awesome."
"The currency was referenced in the prequels but this is the first time we've had the prop making team design the currency itself."
"That's very cool, very detailed"

Wupiupi first appeared in the 1999 film Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace, the first installment of the Star Wars prequel trilogy.[1] The images for wupiupi coins featured in Star Wars: The Visual Encyclopedia[2] are Ottoman coins issued by Sultans Selim III and Mahmud II in real life.[6][7]

Wupiupi appeared in the second episode of the Obi-Wan Kenobi television series,[8] which was the first show to feature wupiupi, and it was the first time that the currency was designed by the prop making team. The team made at least four prop coins which were made to look very detailed.[5]
