Sunglasses

Utterly trivial, and there's no sign that sunglasses in the Galaxy Far, Far Away|GFFA are any different from those in real life. I don't see how items that are so non-specific to Star Wars (and not any different in Star Wars than in real life) belong in Wookieepedia. What's next? Hat? Shoes? Shirt? Delete

  1. Unless someone can fish up some more notability than this, or some way in which sunglasses have a specific Star Wars context, this should be deleted. jSarek 03:12, 15 May 2006 (UTC)
  2. This falls into my same philosophy on unnecessary articles that aid nothing to our understanding of the GFFA, like unnamed and unimportant background stuff. --SparqMan 04:17, 15 May 2006 (UTC)

  4. DeleteSome one PLEASE tell me this is a joke. Wookiepedia is an encyclopedia that helps people understand and a learn something about SW. We all know there's clothes in the SW universe; we seen a bunch of them in the movies. And we do have article on some the more...um, unique SW clothes, such as the gown of the Queen Amidala, or a Jedi Cloak. But who needs sunglasses? Or Pants? I say delete.(Sorry about this long opinion)Nick sponge 21:59, 17 May 2006 (UTC)
  5. Delete. There is no point for this. Fleet Admiral J. Nebulax (Imperial Holovision) Imperial Emblem 22:03, 17 May 2006 (UTC)

Keep

  1. Keep. But if everyone thinks it doesn't deserve it's own article, then perhaps it could be merged into spectacles. —Unsigned comment by Ozzel (talk • contribs)

Merge into spectacles

  5. By far the best idea. Cutch 03:14, 14 June 2006 (UTC)
  6. The two alone are too trivial, but merged could make a bit of sense. Maybe a rename to Eyewear and expansion would be useful, but probably we should resolve the VFD first. Thinortolan 13:21, 14 June 2006 (UTC)

Neutral/Comments

I realize that the point of this article is to show that sunglasses exist in the GFFA, a fact that's not readily apparent and does merit mentioning. However, we already have List of references to Earth in Star Wars|a better place to list such trivia. Red XIV 03:31, 15 May 2006 (UTC)

  • I fail to see how sunglasses are a reference to Earth. - Sikon [Talk] 11:51, 18 May 2006 (UTC)
    • Sunglasses certainly didn't originate on Mars. Red XIV 15:31, 18 May 2006 (UTC)
      • Not every thing that appears both in SW and in real life is a reference to Earth. Pants, for example, aren't. - Sikon [Talk] 15:34, 18 May 2006 (UTC)
        • If E-mail is, then so are sunglasses. Pants, on the other hand, is a joke article that needs to be deleted. Red XIV 21:26, 18 May 2006 (UTC)
  • As an inclusionist, I feel that if it exists in the GFFA, regardless of its commonness around the galaxy, then it should be here, however the article must make clear why it is here and what things are associated with it. For example: Radiation. It occurs here, and also in the GFFA, but I did not simply define what it was and called it a day. I found as many connections to the GFFA as possible, because they have to deal with it. Since we don't see sunglasses or spectacles as often, mostly if not all in Expanded Universe, then it isn't quite a common thing, however we have tons of articles on armor, but because they are more specialized they have articles. E-mail is an oddity that alludes to the e-mail on Earth too much and must be included. -- Riffsyphon1024 08:01, 9 June 2006 (UTC)

Comments on merger with spectacles

I do not think that sunglasses and spectacles should be merged for the following reasons. Spectacles serve to improve/enhance one's sight, while sunglasses serve to protect the eyes from being temporarily blinded by the rays of a sun. Thus, they are functionally two quite different entities. KEJ 12:54, 22 May 2006 (UTC)

  • I disagree. Sunglasses may have a different function, but they often improve/enhance sight as well--just like prescription sunglasses in our universe. Furthermore, the invention of sunglasses is a natural offshoot of the invention of spectacles. I think the two are very related. - Breathesgelatin 21:40, 22 May 2006 (UTC)
    • Related, yes, the same, no KEJ 08:23, 23 May 2006 (UTC)
      • Star Wars Galaxies has sunglasses, though it just calls them eyewear IIRC. Maybe both sunglasses and spectacles could be merged into that? --Azizlight 08:07, 31 May 2006 (UTC)
        • If there are more types of eyewear, then it would be useful as a category. KEJ 21:32, 3 June 2006 (UTC)
          • How about Anakin's podrace goggles? --Azizlight 12:18, 5 June 2006 (UTC)
            • Such a category could also cover the variety of KOTOR visors. Havac 21:09, 6 June 2006 (UTC)
              • Yeah, I think we should create a category called 'eyewear'. It's better than the "pruducts" and "technology" categories. KEJ 23:31, 8 June 2006 (UTC)

New suggestion

Please see here. Also, spectacles can be in the article as well, that is, if it's created. Fleet Admiral J. Nebulax (Imperial Holovision) Imperial Emblem 01:02, 19 May 2006 (UTC)

  • I disagree here. Sunglasses are not clothes as such, and, surely, spectacles are not clothes at all. KEJ 12:51, 22 May 2006 (UTC)
    • Yet, like clothes, you wear them. It doesn't really have to be "List of clothing". I only used that title when I had it only for pants. But you have to admit that these articles are kind of pointless. This way, the information stays in a more appropiate place. Fleet Admiral J. Nebulax (Imperial Holovision) Imperial Emblem 21:52, 22 May 2006 (UTC)
      • You also wear amulets, jewelry, diapers, make-up etc. and they don't count as clothes. The articles are not pointless. Sunglasses and spectacles occur in the canon, which should be enough to warrant their own articles. KEJ 08:26, 23 May 2006 (UTC)
        • So do pants, shirts, shoes, helmets, hats, etc. They are pointless because many, many people wear them, and plus, they're stuff we have in real-life. A list of these things would help keep it organized. Fleet Admiral J. Nebulax (Imperial Holovision) Imperial Emblem 01:36, 26 May 2006 (UTC)
          • And then, what's next? Ball? Door? Sand? Sky? Movement? By having each clothing item as its own article, people might get the idea that it's okay to make an article about anything small in Star Wars. Fleet Admiral J. Nebulax (Imperial Holovision) Imperial Emblem 01:39, 26 May 2006 (UTC)
            • The spectacles actually play kid of a central role in the narrative SW-universe, since 3-PO uses a pair of them as disguise in one of the Droids episodes. Besides, you're arguing that articles on pants, shirts, shoes, etc. would be pointless because so many people wear them IU. Maybe so, but I'd imagine that not many people wear sunglasses or spectacles IU, so the occurrence of spectacles or sunglasses would be salient enough to warrant an article. KEJ 14:09, 26 May 2006 (UTC)
              • How about a creating a page called glasses and encompassing all of these things
                • That would basically be the same as a merger with spectacles. KEJ 07:30, 31 May 2006 (UTC)
                • Alternative, the article could be renamed shades which would open up for inclusion of more high-tech types of eyegear having the same function as sunglasses. KEJ 23:29, 8 June 2006 (UTC)

Another appearance

I was just looking though Star Wars Adventure Journal 2, and I discovered another appearanceof sunglasses. The very first illustration of "Big Quince" (p.271) depicts Tru'eb Cholakk with a pair of sunglasses. It should be a point for those who want to keep the article. KEJ 21:30, 3 June 2006 (UTC)

Yet another appearance

Skimming through my Star Wars Encyclopedia, I came across an image of Kraaken wearing sunglasses (it's on page 198 in the encyclopaedia). That should be yet another point for those who wish to keep the article. KEJ 23:26, 8 June 2006 (UTC)
