I think we need to avoid even coming close to speculating here, since the source itself isn't exactly crystal clear on the implications. Inferring the obvious is easy enough, but we don't know it for sure. Try finding a way to tweak this a little bit to say only what we do know. The way the P/T describes this is exactly what I'm looking for: "Seemingly recognizing Vader as his former Jedi General"
