"I hire you because you're one of the best hunters in the Outer Rim, then I tell you that someone broke into my private vaults and stole one of the last EML-850s in the galaxy. And you assumed she was working alone?"
―Sliro Barsha, to Vail Tormin[1]

During 3 ABY, the Alliance to Restore the Republic organized a robbery on Westhill Palace of the desert planet of Cantonica to rescue the captured rebel operative Asara Deyn.

Prelude

"A boss named Sliro. Runs a syndicate called Zerek Besh. They're new, they're rich, and rumors has it they've got the underworld scarred."
"Which means security."
"Enough. But a fortune for us if you can get to his vault.
"
―Dennion and Kay Vess[1]

Following the Battle of Hoth, in 3 ABY,[2] the Imperial Security Bureau of the Galactic Empire created the criminal organization Zerek Besh to infiltrate the criminal underworld and uncover hidden rebel networks. At some point during the process, the Alliance to Restore the Republic affiliate Asara Deyn was captured and detained in Westhill Palace on the desert world of Cantonica. To rescue Asara Deyn, the rebel Dennion assembled a crew of two other rebels, along with a request for an additional crew member.[1]

The Cantonican Kay Vess and her Merqaal partner-in-crime Nix, after a failed attempt to infiltrate a Sixth Kin club, was introduced to the heist by the bar owner Bram Shano as Vess' chance to earn enough credits to leave Cantonica. After accepting the job and meeting with the crew, Vess and Nix boarded a speeder with the other crew members. Dennion briefed to Vess over Zerek Besh, claiming their plan was to break into Sliro's vault and steal his fortune. However, Dennion hid the crew's true intentions to Vess, which was to only rescue Deyn.[1]

The mission

Infiltrating the mansion

"You guys don't mess around."
"When you hit a crime boss like Sliro you have to mean it.
"
―Kay Vess and Dennion[1]

The crew dropped off Vess and Nix at a cliff near the palace, with Vess being ordered to infiltrate the mansion, disable its security, and reach the vault. After Vess traversed across the cliff and arrived near the garden of the palace, Dennion triggered a detonation to lure most of the Zerek Besh enforcers away from the mansion. Vess would then infiltrate deeper into the mansion and disable the security doors of the vault. At the gate, Vess was confronted by a TT-8L gatekeeper droid, with Vess suggested by Dennion to enter the password, "grandio cha", which means "The chosen one" in Huttese.[1]

At the vault, Vess used an override provided by Dennion to open the gate, only to discover the imprisoned Asara Deyn in the vault. After Vess became baffled by the situation, Dennion would arrive and knock Vess aside, unlocking the handcuffs on Deyn and inform the crew that they should leave. Dennion told Vess that she would get her payment once they escape, but Vess demanded her payment to be delivered immediately, unaltered by Deyn's revelation that the crew is a part of the Alliance to Restore the Republic. Though Deyn attempted to recruit Vess, Dennion would stun Vess due to the limited time, leaving Vess behind.[1]

Vess' escape

"What do the rebels want with Zerek Besh?"
"Listen, I don't know any rebels. But I know people. Let me go. I get answers. We solve this together."
"You're going to have to do better than that.
"
―Sliro Barsha and Kay Vess[1]

After Vess recovered consciousness, she was met by the crime lord Sliro Barsha, leader of Zerek Besh. Barsha would inquire Vess on her relationship and knowledge over the rebels, and remain unconvinced by Vess' reasoning. After ordering the Zerek Besh enforcers to take Vess, Nix attacked Barsha, creating an opportunity for Vess and Nix to escape and temporarily lock Barsha and the enforcers in the cell instead. While fighting her way out of the mansion, Vess overheard Barsha, angered by her actions, to place a death mark on her. After making her way through the ventilation system of the mansion, Vess arrived at the hangar to find the EML-850 light freighter Trailblazer, which she believed could help her escape. Vess would blast her way onto the starship, and barley activate it to fly above Cantonica orbit. Persuaded by Zerek Besh fighters, Vess would allow the Trailblazer to jump into hyperspace towards Toshaal system, allowing her to escape from Cantonica.[1]

Aftermath

"I want a death mark on her, now! I promise a fortune for whoever can bring me her head!"
―Sliro Barsha, over Kay Vess[1]

Kay Vess, due to being the only participant of the robbery that was found by Zerek Besh, would be continuously hunted down by the syndicate for her death mark across the Outer Rim. As a result of the robbery, the palace would also have fortified security in response. However, the event inspired the crime lord Jaylen Vrax that Sliro's mansion can be breached, causing him to later recruit Vess as part of his campaign. Because the rebel Asara Deyn was extracted from the palace, Zerek Besh would lack a captured rebel to prove its efficiency as a secret project being part of the Imperial Security Bureau, leading to the Sith Lord Darth Vader later deeming Zerek Besh a failure.[1]

Behind the scenes

The Westhill Palace robbery first appeared in the 2024 Massive Entertainment video game Star Wars Outlaws, serving as the main focus for the main quest titled "Outlaws".[1]
