"I was studying at the academy off-planet when the Empire came and enslaved the miners. My dad, my sister. They're still there as slaves. Joining the Rebellion was supposed to be my way to save them…"
―Vharn, to Beilert Valance[1]

A female individual was the sister of the human engineer Vharn.[1] By 3 ABY,[2] they and Vharn's father were enslaved by the Galactic Empire after it took over their homeworld, the mining planet Sorgal 12, where they worked as miners. Vharn, who had been off-world at the time, eventually joined the Rebel Alliance to free his family.[1]

That year,[2] Vharn planned to betray the Alliance by providing the Empire with plans for a deflector shield generator that could withstand an orbital bombardment, and the Empire would ransom his family back. As the bounty hunter Beilert Valance attempted to deliver the engineer to the Rebellion, he asked Vharn why he had joined the Alliance. In response, the engineer told Valance of his family's enslavement by the Empire and his hopes to free them. After the hunter discovered Vharn's betrayal, he killed him and delivered the engineer's intel to the Alliance. Afterward, Valanace requested half of his payment be sent to ransom Vharn's family.[1]

Behind the scenes

Vharn's sister was mentioned in "Two Sides to Every Sortie," a comic story written by Ethan Sacks and published by Marvel Comics as part of the one-shot comic Empire Ascendant 1,[1] which was released on December 18, 2019.[3]

The comic also features the Rebel Alliance occupying Echo Base, which is evacuated in the same year according to Star Wars: Timelines. Therefore, the events of "Two Sides to Every Sortie" must also take place in 3 ABY.
