- "Silooth…tuk'ata…veergundark…krastenane…"
- ―Dooku, reading from The Bestiary of Darth Caldoth
Veergundarks were a type of Sith warbeast listed in the book The Bestiary of Darth Caldoth. The Jedi Initiate Dooku read the creatures' name aloud after discovering the book in the Archive of Forbidden Artifacts in the Jedi Temple on the planet Coruscant in 88 BBY.
Description
The veergundark was a type of Sith warbeast that partially shared its name with the gundark,[1] a type of non-sentient predator from the planet Vanqor.[2]
History
Veergundarks shared part of their name with gundarks.
Veergundarks were listed along with other Sith warbeasts in The Bestiary of Darth Caldoth, a tome compiled by the Sith Lord Darth Caldoth[1] by 1032 BBY.[3] By 88 BBY,[4] the book had been acquired by the Jedi Order and stored in the Archive of Forbidden Artifacts in the Jedi Temple on the planet Coruscant. There, it was found by the Jedi Initiates Dooku and Sifo-Dyas. Dooku began reading names from the book aloud, including that of the veergundark.[1]
Based on what he saw, Dooku assumed the creatures to be hideous, but Sifo-Dyas recognized the names as belonging to Sith warbeasts and informed his companion, who was shocked to learn the Jedi held a text on the subject. Dooku later recounted the incident to his sister Jenza via holo-letter.[1] Around 23 BBY,[5] Dooku gave data disks of his conversations with Jenza to his recently recruited Sith assassin—Asajj Ventress—for her investigation into Jenza's location, and she listened to the message mentioning veergundarks.[1]
Behind the scenes
In the current Star Wars canon, the veergundark was mentioned in a flashback in the audio drama Dooku: Jedi Lost,[1] which was written by Cavan Scott[1] and published on April 30, 2019.[6] The spelling of veergundark in canon was confirmed by the audio drama's script release[7] on October 1 of the same year.[6] The creatures originated in the Star Wars Legends continuity, where they were mentioned in the Book of Sith: Secrets from the Dark Side, a 2012 reference book written by Daniel Wallace with an illustration of a veergundark by Terryl Whitlatch.[8]
