A question.

Hey Silly Dan, I've been thinking lately about how I've been the subject of numerous personal attacks by various people. I was wondering if you could give me some advice on how to avoid them. Fleet Admiral J. Nebulax (Imperial Holovision) 20px 22:24, 18 June 2006 (UTC)

You could try being a bit less aggressive when arguing with people, but people have told you this before, and you have been a lot more polite lately, so I don't think that counts as advice at this point. A lot of your personal attacks seem to be coming from return vandals: the only way I can think of to avoid that might be to treat them very dispassionately — i.e. use the blandly-worded boilerplate templates to warn them, report vandals on the VIP page by saying something unemotional like "minor vandalism on Don-Wan Kihotay" rather than "the idiot messed up Don-Wan Kihotay, someone ban him already!", and generally don't let them think they've got to you. This won't reduce it to nothing, because repeat vandals are, deep down, a bunch of idiot jackasses who get off on being annoying for some reason I don't understand because I took Greek mythology rather than abnormal psychology at university, but it might lessen it.
Secondly, if things are getting to the point where Wookieepedia is becoming a source of stress for you, take a few days off. Whatever was annoying you will probably seem less important by the time you come back. I'm taking some time off myself — mostly for work-related reasons, but partly to take a vacation from a fairly time-consuming hobby.... —Silly Dan (talk) 23:50, 18 June 2006 (UTC)
  • Thanks. I've been working to be less agressive ever since that failed admin nomination; glad to hear that I'm improving a little. Anyway, I think I'll probably be on less every day... I'm not sure I could take a vacation from Wookieepedia. ;) Fleet Admiral J. Nebulax (Imperial Holovision) 20px 00:37, 19 June 2006 (UTC)

Why is the 'Correct spellings' feature in 'Things To Do' unavailable? Do you know when it will become available? Thanks.Snoop 09:26, 19 June 2006 (UTC)

  • Several maintenance features were removed in newer versions of the MediaWiki software

— ironically, because they weren't being maintained. —Silly Dan (talk) 16:00, 19 June 2006 (UTC)

Farghul (species)

I noticed you closed my editted section on Farghul (species) for copyright, however this was not, to my knowledge, copyrighted. I'm just curious where you got that idea from. Unsigned comment by XP105 (talk • contribs)

  • It was almost word-by-word identical to the description in Alien Encounters, which meant to me that you either copied it directly from that book or from a website that copied it. (A lot of WEG material is copied verbatim and put on the web: since it's out of print, some people think it's no longer under copyright. This is not true.) If you want to expand it again, please ask someone else to check if it's OK: as I mentioned on my talk page, I'm mostly offline for the next few weeks. —Silly Dan (talk) 16:00, 19 June 2006 (UTC)

Episode III Vandalism

Just 2 let u know! Anakin Thomas 19:33, 4 July 2006 (UTC)

Hiya Silly Dan, we haven't met

Hi, I'm Anakin Thomas, Hate to go telling tales, but Jack Nebulax removed a pic of force lightning being used by Dooku that I took from Force Lightning and put on Anakin Skywalker and Dooku. Do you know why he deleted them? Do I have you're permission to put them back?

Cheers

Anakin Thomas 16:47, 21 June 2006 (UTC)

  • He explained why on the edit summary and on his talk page. If you think that they should be put back, state your reasons on the talk page for the respective articles rather than immediately asking an admin to step in. I suspect you'll find a lot of users won't want the pictures added, as there isn't much room. Too many pictures can make the text hard to read. —Silly Dan (talk) 02:38, 22 June 2006 (UTC)

Second Battle of Bothawui

I changed the infobox to a four-way battle if you want to check it over. I tried to simplify it a bit so not to be too huge. --Eyrezer 01:15, 22 June 2006 (UTC)

Hey

erm...silly question..but when i revert i look throught the article and delete the offending material..is there an easier way to do a revert? Thanks in advance, Jedi Dude 16:33, 23 June 2006 (UTC)

  • There sure is! Click on the history tab for a page, which will take you to a page looking like this. Click on the date for the last non-vandalised version. The old version should appear, complete with an edit tab (see here for an example.) You can then edit and save the old, non-vandalised version. The software will warn you that you're editing an old version, but if you're getting rid of vandalism, this is obviously exactly what you want to do. (We administrators have access to a "rollback" button on contributions page, history page, and diff page which includes the current version of a page. This allows us to do that reversion a lot faster. 8) )—Silly Dan (talk) 16:42, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
  • oh i get ya, i didn't thinking of using the history page to get rid of efforts...cheers. Jedi Dude 17:10, 26 June 2006 (UTC)
    • haha another question..how do you creat articles...without having to click on the redlinks...cheers in advance Jedi Dude 11:37, 28 June 2006 (UTC)
      • Easiest thing to do is go to the search box and search for the title of the article you want to create: if an article doesn't exist with that title, a link you can click on will appear asking if you want to create the article. —Silly Dan (talk) 11:39, 28 June 2006 (UTC)

Alien recategorization

At the moment the actual category page itself specifies that it is for sentient species. Will that be okay? Going back and changing them will be a little bit of a pain at the mo... I haven't have worked out what categories to put all the "mammal" species in. Perhaps I can implement it then? --Eyrezer 11:26, 25 June 2006 (UTC)

  • I added to the discussion on that talk page. --Eyrezer 11:55, 25 June 2006 (UTC)

Interesting facts

Hi Dan, sorry if I once again writes at the wrong place, but I'm about to establish myself here on wookiepeedia and hopefully i will learn in time. But I need you attention, Wikipedia is using a hull and shield rating statistic as well as the maximal output of the weaponry on all of their ships and vehicles. And I'm just wondering if it possibly could be done here on Wookipeedia. Just thought that this wiki should have at least as much facts as the main wiki.

check out the link if you are intrested. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Destroyer

Thanks for your time. Lorth Needa 01:05, 26 June 2006 (UTC)

  • You might want to clear any major additions to the article on Talk:Imperial I-class Star Destroyer. Spacecraft in Star Wars tend to have a lot of contradictory statistics floating around, some of which are completely unofficial fan-made statistics, and some of which are from official publications which are contradicted by other official statistics. I try to stay out of these discussions myself. —Silly Dan (talk) 01:38, 26 June 2006 (UTC)
  • Yeah I know, will do from now on. But I have edited and made at least 2 new articles. I promise you that my userpage isn't the thing that will draw my attention the most. Thanks for your patience. Lorth Needa 21:51, 28 June 2006 (UTC)

  • Wikipedia's not always a reliable source: it's just as easy for people to add fanon to Wikipedia as it is to add to Wookieepedia, but most Wikipedians watching the recent changes page aren't watching for incorrect Star Wars information (possibly because we siphoned all the Star Wars experts over here.) If Wikipedia's all you have, we may want to delete Doran Kruton from both sites. —Silly Dan (talk) 00:02, 18 July 2006 (UTC)

Fighting

  • Thank you. I was actually just trying to find out how to report continuous user "abuse". I admit I used an obscenity on User:Redemption's talk page, but this was because of how much anger he's causing me due to contiuously harassing me. I can't make him leave me alone. I'm glad an administrator found us because I was trying to figure out how to report this. At one point (as you'll see on his talk page) I tried to give him the benefit of the doubt and try to politely explain our problem. He replied, sarcastic as ever, by saying that my attempted truce was a "sob story" rather than simply agreeing that we should both stop, as I had hoped. If you need to cool off ban us then I agree it may have to be the right move. But just please make him stop!Lucas Wolfdog 00:37, 26 July 2006 (UTC)
    • Oh please...don't make me seem like the bad guy in this when I was giving you some plain and simply advice. If you think I'm trying to be mean then your lost and good luck in the world is what I have to say to you. And in case you forgot, you were the first to throw the insults. --RedemptionTalk 15px 00:43, 26 July 2006 (UTC)
      • I don't care who started it. Just stop it. —Silly Dan (talk) 00:45, 26 July 2006 (UTC)
        • Yeah, and I took your advice as insults. And I was also very insulted by your little "gone with the wind" link or whatever. But it doesn't matter, so long as this means you'll finally leave me alone. And by the way, I'm at least admitting that I was also somewhat rude because I was annoyed. Lucas Wolfdog 01:27, 26 July 2006 (UTC)
          • Obviously we're not going to resolve this any time soon. For the last time, I'm sorry if I seemed over-sensitive although it wasn't your business anyway. But at least I'm sorry! There! Now watch, he'll just reply with some nasty remark. Lucas Wolfdog 01:31, 26 July 2006 (UTC)
            • Stop trying to get the last word, and let it go. (And as an admin, it actually is my business to stop pointless flamewars.) 01:35, 26 July 2006 (UTC)
              • Oh, oops. Didn't see that message, Silly. =P --RedemptionTalk 15px 01:38, 26 July 2006 (UTC)
              • All that I want is for him to apologize like a human being. I don't care about the last word. I want him to have the last word: "sorry". That's it. I won't write anymore. And I won't edit anymore anyway. So it's all resolved. Lucas Wolfdog 01:40, 26 July 2006 (UTC)
              • Well, too bad. I'm not apologizing for being right. --RedemptionTalk 15px 01:41, 26 July 2006 (UTC)

And that's when I blocked you both for two hours to cool it. (And as a completely irrelevant aside, don't call me Silly. If you were in Sherwood Forest, would you call Little John "Little" for short? If you were in Springfield, would you call Fat Tony the Mafia boss "Fat" for short? Probably not, no. Please call me SD, Dan, or Silly Dan.) (And no, being called Silly had nothing to do with the two hour block.) —Silly Dan (talk) 01:52, 26 July 2006 (UTC)

  • Yes. I know. I caught that and was correcting it as you were blocking me. Oops. --RedemptionTalk 15px 04:05, 26 July 2006 (UTC)
  • Silly Dan, I observed your conduct during the Redemption/Wolfdog conflict and thought you might be interested in a new template I made: Template: Argument. I placed it on those pages. If that is a usurpation of admin. powers, it was completely unintentional. Atarumaster88 20:03, 27 July 2006 (UTC)
    • That's a good template, though it's probably better kept on the talk pages of contentious articles rather than user talk pages. —Silly Dan (talk) 20:43, 27 July 2006 (UTC)
      • Uh, yeah. I knew that of course, but it slipped my mind. I guess I should re-clarify that template to be a talk page template. Atarumaster88 20:47, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

How long should I wait?

  • Silly Dan, how long should I wait for a response to a vfd page, or question about an article/source on a talk page before taking matters into my own hands. I realize answers may vary, but a general time line would help a lot! Thanks. Atarumaster88 20:54, 2 August 2006 (UTC)
    • What do you mean, "take matters into your own hands?" Anyway, vfds either wrap up within two days, or languish for a couple of weeks. I suppose if there's a VFD you think has reached consensus, you can alert an admin about it. —Silly Dan (talk) 21:16, 2 August 2006 (UTC)
      • Well, not any vandalism. I do NOT do that. Ever. I meant that on questions about articles, I would go with my best knowledge of a topic (such as whether to expand a section) and let someone else undo it if it is not a good edit. On VFDs, there is one that has only had input from maybe two other people. Second Battle of Borleias (Yuuzhan Vong War) was merged by me with Third Battle of Borleias (Yuuzhan Vong War). Well, being a noob, I put the Second page up for deletion. I tried to move the Third page to replace the Second page, but it would not let me re-direct the page cause there was stuff already there. I need the Second page deleted so I can re-direct the Third page. This is obviously not the prettiest method of editing, but the finished result looks or will look quite nice (I think). I could just cut all the content from the Third page and replace the Second page that way and re-direct the Third page to Second- hence, taking matters into my own hands. Sorry about the length of this post. Atarumaster88 21:39, 2 August 2006 (UTC)
        • Thanks a bunch!!!! Now, all I have to do is continue to improve the article until it reaches FA quality. Atarumaster88 03:47, 3 August 2006 (UTC)

    • I hope it's the same person who's been adding foolishness all week, since I blocked that range of addresses without warning....this will be much easier when the upgrade comes and we (a) get the real IP addresses of AOL users and (b) can block anonymous users in an IP range but not registered users. —Silly Dan (talk) 15:32, 4 August 2006 (UTC)

Sorry to bother you again

Silly Dan, sorry to bother you again, but you seem to be pretty much the only administrator that I can reliably go to for help on anything. How are awards given out? Are there requirements? Atarumaster88 19:40, 4 August 2006 (UTC)

The only ones for which I understand the process are the only two which are currently being awarded on an ongoing basis:
  1. WOTM is awarded monthly, based on whoever gets the most votes. Anyone can vote, so long as they don't vote for themselves. 8)
  2. The Pit Droid Award of Diligence is given by whosoever feels like giving it out to any user seen all over recent changes making important edits, such as Ozzel's recent work on getting rid of unused and duplicate images.
  3. We have a stagnant discussion for awards over Wookieepedia:Award Proposals, but I don't think any of the awards on that page have been given out recently, other than the pit droid award. We should probably steal check out the awards process on other wikis.
  4. In lieu of specific awards, if someone's doing good work, you can just go to their talk page and say thanks, I guess.
Hope this helps. —Silly Dan (talk) 20:03, 4 August 2006 (UTC)
  • It helps. I didn't know if one had to be an admin to give out the awards. I understand the WOTM pretty well. Should probably look up that vandalism award and give it to some admins for their tireless struggle against the forces of evil a.k.a. vandals. Atarumaster88 20:06, 4 August 2006 (UTC)
  • Nuts. How many important edits (approximately) are good for the Pit Droid award? Atarumaster88 20:07, 4 August 2006 (UTC)
    • I don't know: we don't have any guidelines. In the past, it's been given out to people who spent quite some time on a big task (like when StarNeptune took the lead in splitting up Category:Planets by region: a huge task indeed. You could probably give one out for working on a much smaller task than that, though.) —Silly Dan (talk) 20:15, 4 August 2006 (UTC)

A question

I was looking over the uncategorized articles page and saw the Second Battle of Geonosis page. At first I marked it for deletion, but then I wondered if I should be doing that. I'm trying to contribute by cleaning up things like uncategorized articles, and I don't want to end up doing anything stupid. I removed the tag, and wanted to ask you what I should do, or if I should even do anything at all. - Angel Blue 451 01:17, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

  • As it was sourceless for over a week, and spent much of that time containing only text saying there was no such things, it is eligible for deletion. You could have marked it for speedy deletion, but I already deleted it. If it turns out to be canon, and it gets recreated, losing the text there will be no great loss. —Silly Dan (talk) 01:27, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

Our only policy on userpages is on Wookieepedia:User page policy, but it's only a draft policy at present. —Silly Dan (talk) 19:02, 12 August 2006 (UTC)(Unquote)on this forum topic(Link: Forum:I Have a question... ),I was refering to a small collection of information from Star Wars movies and then I posted a topic asking if it was allowed.(Here's the link: User:SWME/Entries). Now do you understand my question?--SWME 19:52, 12 August 2006 (UTC)

  • I'm just not sure what information you wanted to put on there, is all. It's probably all right, though. —Silly Dan (talk) 19:53, 12 August 2006 (UTC)
  • Oh,Okay. The information I was going to post was all the information from the movies as possible.Thank you!--SWME 20:01, 12 August 2006 (UTC)
    • We already have extensive articles on all six movies, though. I'm still not sure what the purpose of your page is. —Silly Dan (talk) 20:02, 12 August 2006 (UTC)
      • I know,but the only purpose of my page is because I wanted to do it.*winks* *smiles*--SWME 20:08, 12 August 2006 (UTC)

Talk page posting?

Ummm...I hate to ask, but, how do you sign your name with the tidles? Do you put four before your name, or two before your name and two after it...or do you put the tidles after your name? I'm confused.... Lone Dire Cat

  • Answered on your talk page, though you've probably worked it out already. —Silly Dan (talk) 12:16, 13 August 2006 (UTC)

Aquatic vehicle name

I don't get why Nebulax is being so incredibly stubborn about this article. It's about a Kuat vehicle, named with four words that have capital letters in them just like all the other vehicles from KDY. When abbreviated and contracted they form AA-AT (Aquatic Assault Armored Transport). The vehicle is just an aquatic version of the AT-AT (All Terrain Armored Transport). He keeps asking for a source for the abbreviation and it's right there in the name. All the other KDY vehicles named similarly have a capital letter for each word and are abbreviated in exactly the same way. What's wrong with having the abbreviation for a military vehicle when it's full name is just as complicated as the others in the same catalogue? VT-16 01:56, 15 August 2006 (UTC)

  • It's still speculation. Is it speculation at a low enough level that we'd allow it? Possibly. I'd still like to hear from a user other than you and Jack on this. —Silly Dan (talk) 02:09, 15 August 2006 (UTC)
    • That's fine with me. I just think it's absurd that out of all the different vehicles in the KDY/RHE roster, this is the only one that doesn't have a military abbreviation listed. It has the same type of name as everyone else, with capital letters that are meant to go into an abbreviation. Abbreviations are used elsewhere on this site with little canon backing. I've never seen SSD, VSD or ISD anywhere but in debates, yet they seem to be accepted. VT-16 11:59, 15 August 2006 (UTC)

The edits you made to Template:Title...

... didn't make a difference on my screen. What about yours? Fleet Admiral J. Nebulax (Imperial Holovision) (Data file) 20px 23:56, 16 August 2006 (UTC)

Template:W

My suggestion to change the Template:W can be found at User:Gem/Template:W. If you agree with the changes, can we jsut change the template or is there a person is this wiki who should know or shoudl we have a vote or something? I'm not sure how you guys handle stuff here. I'll also make a new version of the anon template at User:Gem/Template:Anon. --Gem (talk) 00:38, 17 August 2006 (UTC)

  • Thanks! The best way to get input on the changes would be to go to the template's talk page, so the users who have it watched will notice that comments have been added. —Silly Dan (talk) 00:45, 17 August 2006 (UTC)

Please don't blank the "Images for deletion" warning template. It serves an important purpose here. Thanks, —Silly Dan

User page policies

Could you tell me about the wikis user page policies? I partially understand your recent revert of a user page. The user had flamed another user, but why didn't you revert to the blank version? Aren't users allowed to blank their user pages? Are there any other rules? I'm sure that anything illegal/pornographic/flaming/trolling/etc is forbidden, but how about adverts, politics, religion related stuff, etc? Unsigned comment by Gem (talk • contribs)

  • Um...we don't actually have a full policy yet, but the proposal is at Wookieepedia:User page policy, with the image use policy at Wookieepedia:User image policy. You are allowed to blank your user page, but I arbitrarily decided to revert that user's page to a non-blank state instead, since the blank page was seemingly just meant as an intermediate step between the original version and a "flame-warrior" version. I assumed he'd prefer to actually have a user page, but he can blank it again if he really wants. —Silly Dan (talk) 20:23, 18 August 2006 (UTC)
  • Just as I thought. Btw, do people really use the star in front of all talk page comments here? --Gem (talk) 20:28, 18 August 2006 (UTC)
  • Usually, the * is used. I couldn't tell you why, though. —Silly Dan (talk) 20:31, 18 August 2006 (UTC)

User:BobafettH23.

Silly Dan, BobafettH23 shares the same computer as the recent vandal YoDa90210. When the vandal was blocked, BobafettH23 was somehow included in that block. Could you please unblock YoDa90210 so BobafettH23 can have access to Wookieepedia again? Fleet Admiral J. Nebulax (Imperial Holovision) (Data file) 20px 13:39, 19 August 2006 (UTC)

  • SFH unblocked him last night, but the autoblock may have been left on. I've unblocked the user by number, hopefully things will be fixed now. —Silly Dan (talk) 13:44, 19 August 2006 (UTC)

Userpage linking / Picture

  • I was wondering,
    • 1.)is it O.K to put links to other User's Userpages on your Userpage. say that 3 times fast. Any-whoo. I've just re-modled my Page dramaticly and have a little box linking to Users I have encountered, talked to, or talked to me.
    • 2.)On another hand, after you have a userpage main pic. can you change it? I looked around and no other user i can find with a main pic. ever changed it. I have, Grappa the Hutt was too bold and common, Backwords Jabba face is creepier than a regular Jabba face. Thanks, I beleve your link here is also on my page. This is out of respect and reputation telling you all this. --Jabbathehuttgartogg 03:25, 20 August 2006 (UTC)

Is there...

Er...Hi again.Is there anthing new about this wiki I need to know?--SWME 19:17, 20 August 2006 (UTC)

  • I'd like to help you, but you'll need to be more specific. —Silly Dan (talk) 23:44, 20 August 2006 (UTC)

What the heck?

I was going to leave you a message, but there was this weird thing that said "Editing conflict:User talk:Silly Dan".What is this?--SWME 19:23, 20 August 2006 (UTC)

  • It probably means that someone else was trying to edit my talk page at the same time you were. —Silly Dan (talk) 23:44, 20 August 2006 (UTC)
  • I'll keep that in mind.--SWME 22:31, 24 August 2006 (UTC)

Signature policy

So is there a new place to discuss and vote on the new sig policy? --Gem (talk) 20:06, 21 August 2006 (UTC)

  • Sorry for the delay, I got this new video game....anyway, we didn't start a new CT thread yet. I suppose we could either continue with the old one or start a new one.—Silly Dan (talk) 12:34, 22 August 2006 (UTC)

Mp3s

  • How do you upload sfx from star wars movies. I'm in the prosess of puting the entire SAGA in audio. All I have is jabba's laugh at the moment. The laugh would go great with the article. How do I upload it? --Jabbathehuttgartogg 30px 30px 16:52, 24 August 2006 (UTC)
    • I haven't tried it myself, but I think they are uploaded in the same way as images are. Help:Audio currently only contains information on listening to them, so you may want to check the equivalent Help:Audio page on Wikipedia for advice. I do know that you're supposed to use OGG format, not MP3s, and that only brief sound clips can be used for fair use and bandwidth reasons. If your question is how to put things in OGG format, I have no experience with that. —Silly Dan (talk) 17:00, 24 August 2006 (UTC)

More policy

  • Silly Dan, I placed a reply on the discussion of Wookieepedia: User page policy several days ago, but the page was made official policy and no response was ever left. Is there a reason for that? Atarumaster88 17:50, 24 August 2006 (UTC)
    • We decided to adopt the policy as it stood during the last IRC conference. Your notes indicated to me that you generally agreed with the policy, but you had a few proposals for clarification: the other admins and I just haven't gotten around to addressing your queries yet. —Silly Dan (talk) 18:05, 24 August 2006 (UTC)
      • Okay. P.S. Don't forget to discuss WOTM for R and Wboy retroactively. Long overdue if you ask me. Atarumaster88 18:09, 24 August 2006 (UTC)
