      • Yeah, Nav-computer.com is an awesome reference, one that I'm proud to say I've had a slight effect on (I've caught a few small errors and made a handful of minor suggestions to Carty that he's implemented). Anyway, if you're interested in issues of Star Wars cartography, the Galaxy Map Discussion Thread at the Official Site's forums is full of useful information and discussion with people like Carty himself, Holocron keeper Leland "Tasty Taste" Chee, Jason Fry, Dan Wallace, and others.   • While I agree with you, I would definitely refrain from posting it until we get a confirmed vote on how those articles should be handled. Drastic changes to the Wiki (such as merging major articles) should definitely be handled democratically. JSarek 18:26, 16 May 2005 (UTC)

JSarek!!!!!

On the Darth Sidious talk page, you voted for Palpatine and Sidious to be merged. I am glad you made this descision. But, have a question. WHY DID YOU VOTE TO PUT IT UNDER PALPATINE? You see, he just took on the name to take over Da Galaxy. It was not his real name, as he was taken at like 3 months of age to train as a Sith. He couldn't remember his name, obviously.   • Calm down, there is no need to yell. First off, do you have any *evidence* that Palpatine is not his real name, other than the young age at which he was taken (and what source is that from, anyway)? All available evidence uses Palpatine for his name, and all existing sources use Palpatine for his name.
Secondly, you need to realize that this is a collaborative effort, that all of us take part equally in. There are certain changes (new articles, additions, small or factual corrections in existing articles) that we should feel free to make, but others (merging major articles, overwriting existing articles, deleting articles) should only be done after consulting the community. You've already alienated a large number of people here with your insistence that the Palpatine/Sidious dispute only has one resolution - your resolution - and continuing to force the issue only makes this worse. You've already been temporarily banned once for re-implementing changes that were repeatedly reversed by moderators. Don't continue in courses of action that will only serve to weaken your case and possibly result in more severe reactions from the community. JSarek 22:46, 24 May 2005 (UTC)

Perlemian Trade Route stuff

Hola, jSarek -- know you from over at TF.N boards.

Anyways, had some thoughts on the founding of the Perlemian Trade Route (saw your comments on the "History" page there):

You mentioned that the Perlemian existed as far back as the Old Republic's founding, but in the game Knights of the Old Republic, it's stated that the Perlemian had only recently gotten established after the Great Sith War (the reason for Taris's recent rapid decay).

A retcon needed? Possibly.

Was racking my brain trying to think of the source which established the much earlier pioneering (RPG sourcebooks, Essential Guides, et cetera), but am coming up slightly empty. But anyways, if correct, it would seem there's now two conflicting official existences for the lane -- KotOR, and whichever other source that mentioned it during an earlier time.

Taking both the game and any other potential source at 100 percent face value, it could be that the Perlemian Trade Route -- or rather an earlier form of the Perlemian -- existed in some proto ur-form during the Republic's founding, but which was still subject to the hyperspatial-beacon setup that we know existed during that era.

Probably far more an an amalgamation of several lesser, smaller routes which -- 21,000 years later -- got reincorporated into one single, major designated lane from the Core to the Tion Cluster.

This entire concatenation works VERY well when one looks at the map and the overall ebb and flow of the battles of the Great Sith War (and the Great Hyperspace War, for that matter) -- the Republic's troop movements between Coruscant, Teta, and the Ziost/Korriban regions follow almost precisely the later run of the Perlemian, when there would have been a great urgency for steamlining and maintaining the military lines of supply.

War has traditionally been the womb in which most technological and social innovation gestates; prior to the Sith Wars, what was the past-and-future Perlemian might have still been but a vague entangling of varying navigational byways and switchbacks without any real central throughfare, perhaps having fallen apart into segregated hyperlane hubs (as we know from Taris having sat at such an intersection).

Thus, with the sudden onset of war engulfing the Republic...things must've cleared up quick, with the mad scramble to establish a single reasonably-navigable corridor from whence the Republic's military convoys could gain entrée to the Mid and Outer Rims. After the war ended -- not coincidentally a traditional period when trade and travel frequently booms -- the incorporation of the Perlemian Trade Route into the official galactic atlases was done, which tracks with KotOR's histories.

It's slightly detached in places, but it's a fix, and it takes all official LFL material into full account.

  • Hey, Leto II, right? (Blessed Be the search engines, for they let me Find Stuff Out.) There are actually several references to the Perlemian being older than KotOR would indicate. The reference I was citing was Geonosis and the Outer Rim Worlds, which states in its entry for Desevro, "A millennium later [after the fall of Xim the Despot ], Human traders claiming to hail from the center of the galaxy visited the Tion . . . Tion pirate fleets followed the new arrivals back down their so-called Perlemian Trade Route; there, they found rich planets bound in a loose, democratic union - and ill prepared for war." I believe its antiquity is also stated in Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game, Second edition, which says that the Perlemian and the Corellian Run allowed the Colonies, Inner Rim, Expansion Region, and Mid Rim to be explored. The Tales of the Jedi Companion, while not actually saying anything regarding the Route, supports the SWRPG with its map, showing the Perlemmian and Corellian as important routes leading from the Core Worlds to the Expansion Region, and beyond into the Frontier. The Essential Guide to Planets and Moons is clearer, noting that "The first galactic scouts struck out from the Core Worlds along two stable hyperspace paths - the Perlemian Trade Route and the Corellian Run." So, I'm not sure how to treat what seems, from this evidence, to have clearly been a thriving and significant route that stretched from the Core to the Outer Rim well before KotOR takes place. jSarek 05:24, 24 Oct 2005 (UTC)

Interesting information, particularly given that there is indeed a discrepancy betwixt two or three (or four) official LFL sources...that Geonosis and the Outer Rim Worlds entry is fascinating (dug it out for a first-hand look) with its "so-called [Perlemian]" notation, which might very well support the fanon theory of a "loose" Perlemian Trade Route existing in some antiquated form, then getting more completely pioneered/established/locked down after the Exar Kun war.

Wondering if we might briefly mention the up-and-down, ebb-and-flow history in the entry? That would at least account for the various conflicting official sources and the probable in-universe geohistorical "reasons."
