Wanda Sykes

Hello! For a first go that really wasn't a bad effort, good job! My first piece of advice would be to change to the source editor if you're able to, that would make things a whole lot easier for you. To switch to the source editor, all you need to do is go to Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-editing, scroll down to the editor section and in the drop box under "Preferred editor" select the source editor option, and then hit save.

Now on the Wanda page, I think most of the issues come down to the visual editor that you are using, it doesn't seem to allow for things to be done completely. If you don't mind, I would prefer to fix up the page and then show you what I did, and then explain further if necessary? Lewisr (talk) 17:02, 19 December 2022 (UTC)

  • Okay as you can see here I've done a cleanup of the page. Now we need to look at sourcing the page. For Wanda's age and nationality we need to provide some sort of reliable source. I'm afraid I'm not too familiar with what exactly could be used here, maybe an official website of hers? I'm honestly not that familiar with how to specifically source certain things on real world person pages. Or to save time, we can simply remove it for now and come back to it at a later point? Lewisr (talk) 17:23, 19 December 2022 (UTC)
    • Great thank you! You're welcome! That also does apply here, we are not able to use Wikipedia as a source here, and I honestly have no clue if the source they use is okay for us either. Will likely need to ask someone like User:Dentface if they can help on this, as they are a bit more knowledgeable in this. Regarding the image, you are not able to upload images currently until you reach 50 edits, so either you can provide me with the image and source for where it comes from and I/someone else can upload it, or you can wait until you reach 50 and then upload it for yourself! May the Force be with you too Lewisr (talk) 18:04, 19 December 2022 (UTC)

Re: Sourcing

Sure thing! I totally get that our policy pages can sometimes be a little confusing. So - to what page are you looking to add info, and what is the source of that info that we're going to cite? JediMasterMacaroni(Talk) 20:19, 2 January 2023 (UTC)

  • Got it! I'm not familiar with that website, but if it's a reliable source then looks good. What you'll want to do is add your info, and after it, insert a reference. For many websites, we have special templates, but this one doesn't so we'll use our generic {{WebCite}} template. That will look something like <ref name="Encyclopedia">{{Cite_web|url=https://www.encyclopedia.com/people/literature-and-arts/film-and-television-biographies/wanda-sykes|title=Wanda Sykes|archivedate=20230102203205}}</ref>
The url parameter gives the link, the title gives the text to essentially be in front of the link, and the archivedate gives the backup link in case the content gets removed from the intenet - it can be generated at the Wayback Machine. If you want to reuse that reference again later on the article, you don't need to repeat the whole thing - you would just use <ref name="Encyclopedia" />. Hope this helps, and let me know if you have any more questions! JediMasterMacaroni(Talk) 20:35, 2 January 2023 (UTC)
