Ka-Pao was a male Drabatan mechanic who was part of the Resistance. He befriended Moxie Freemaker and her B1-series battle droid R0-GR.[1]

Biography

The mumbling mechanic

"Here you go!"
―Ka-Pao, giving a targeting computer to the sisters Rose and Paige Tico[1]

Ka-Pao was a Drabatan who at some point joined the Resistance and was stationed at their base on D'Qar. As part of the Resistance, Ka-Pao became a private and a mechanic, he also grew acquainted with Moxie Freemaker and her B1-Series battle droid R0-GR.[1]

In 34 ABY, Ka-Pao accompanied Moxie Freemaker and R0-GR while they delivered supplies around the D'Qar Resistance base. Freemaker unveiled her latest creation, the Parts-U-Needer-Speeder. Ka-Pao was unsure about the name choice and liked R0-GR's name suggestion of "The Mobile Parts Platter", but Freemaker refused the suggestion, sticking to the original and telling the two to get in. The trio visited multiple areas of the base supplying those who needed parts, first they delivered a landing gear actuator to a pilot, then the sisters Rose and Paige Tico who were working on a blue-painted X-wing starfighter. The siblings requested a targeting computer and Ka-Pao quickly tossed one to Rose. The team continued around the base coming to a pair of individuals tinkering with a Resistance transport, they needed a new stabilizer gyroscope alongside an Acceleration compensator. R0-GR, who was distracted coming up with new speeder names, passed a deflector shield energizer to Ka-Pao, who then threw it to the pair.[1]

As the battle droid suggested another alternative name for the Parts-U-Needer-Speeder, lieutenant Mundu stepped in front of the speeder, bringing the group to a halt. Aggravated with Freemaker, Mundu recalled he assigned her to inventory. Freemaker told the lieutenant that Ka-Pao and her believed it would be better to bring the right part to the right person using the Parts-U-Needer-Speeder, Ka-Pao once again grimaced at the name. Before Mundu could respond, R0-GR realized his mistake as the Resistance transport—now hooked up to a deflector shield energizer—began spinning out of control with its engines roaring. The transport hit an X-Wing which caused the starfighter to shoot it's blaster cannons, the shots hit a MG-100 StarFortress SF-17 heavy bomber that then fell to the ground, causing Resistance troopers to yell in panic, including a pilot which which was launched onto to already angered Mundu.[1]

Scouting for Leia

"Sir, my aunt, my uncle, and parents all fought for the Rebellion, so I guess I'm just eager to help the Resistance. Maybe a little too eager."
"Ka-Pao, too"
―Moxie Freemaker and Ka-Pao defending their actions[1]

Lieutenant Mundu scolded the group, Freemaker stated that her Zander Freemaker, mother, aunt, and uncle all fought in the Rebellion, so she was eager to help the Resistance, to which Ka-Pao agreed. Mundu was not satisfied with their answer, calling Freemaker rash, foolhardy, and irresponsible. The lieutenant declared R0-GR a security risk and demanded his memory banks be wiped and he be shut down. Freemaker was enraged by this, informing the officer that R0-GR had been in her family for generations and refusing to wipe his memory. Mundu began to yell at the young private, demanding to know if she was refusing a direct order. General Leia Organa interrupted the squabbling, the general dismissed the lieutenant, stating that droids can mean a lot to a rebellion and family. Ka-Pao smiled at Organa's kindness.[1]

General Organa then told the trio that she had a mission for them, they were to scout old rebel bases and report back to her their findings. The team was excited to take on this task and serve the Resistance, Ka-Pao saluted the General and the group began their search across the galaxy.[1]

Ka-Pao, Freemaker, and R0-GR started searching for old rebel bases, they started with Yavin 4, then Atollon, proceeded by Hoth, where they were scared away from the base by a baby Wampa. None of these bases contained anything useless to the Resistance, while traveling in Hyperspace, Ka-Pao groaned in disappointment at their failures, Freemaker tried lifting the teams spirits hoping they would find something of value on Crait.[1]

Salt skiing

"We should put them back together. Then we can take them for a test drive!"
"Oh! Ski, ski, ski, ski!"
―Ka-Pao showing his excitement for fixing the speeders[1]

The team found nothing on Crait either, Ka-Pao was deeply disappointed with this, eating a piece of a rusted lever out of frustration. Freemaker and Ka-Pao expressed to eachother how they felt about failing the general before they were interrupted by R0-GR, who knocked over some broken speeder parts. The battle droid stated he believed they were V-4X-D ski speeders with Ka-Pao saying they looked like junk. Freemaker came up with the idea to fix the speeders and take them on a test drive. Ka-Pao was once again excited given this task and the group started building.Ka-Pao struggled to take apart a piece, and decided to use his mouth to pull it off, which he then spit at R0-GR, causing the droid to fall over and drop an engine. R0-GR didn't let go of the engine as it started flying around the hanger until Ka-Pao grabbed him off of it, the droid expressed his gratitude and the Drabatan said it wasn't a problem.[1]

After the speeders were fixed, the trio took them out on a test drive across the salt plains outside of the hanger. Ka-Pao and Freemaker were having fun while their battle droid companion was struggling to pilot the rickety speeder. Freemaker drew the Alliance Starbird in the salt using the speeders fin. The joyriders were spotted by a First Order probe droid that had started shooting at the speeders. While chasing Ka-Pao, the probe droid shot and destroyed the Resistance ship the group had come on. After having angered the Drabatan, the droid continued its chase, Ka-Pao turned his speeder around in a circle to where he would be behind the droid and began firing on it.[1]

Saved by Maz

The droid led Ka-Pao straight into R0-GR, crashing the two speeders into eachother and launching the battle droid and Drabatan out of their seats, after landing next to eachother, Ka-Pao told R0-GR that it was his fault and the battle droid said they'll settle it later. Freemaker eventually destroyed the probe droid by ejecting from her seat before crashing into it. Ka-Pao and R0-GR cheered and celebrated the droids defeat. The Drabatan then pointed out that their shuttle had been destroyed.[1]

R0-GR assured the others that he knew someone who could help them out, stated that he'd been around the galaxy for quite some time and had made plenty of friends, he then contacted Maz Kanata.[1] Maz collected the crew in a TUG-b13 spacetug and entered hyperspace, with Ka-Pao steering the vessel. Kanata had recognized Freemaker's eyes and revealed that she had known her parents. Ka-Pao listened to their conversation and got hyper when he heard about Moxie's father declaring himself "Super Star Pilot Guy!" As the Drabatan shook his head in excitement, he was grabbed by R0-GR and thrown to the back of the ship with Freemaker and Kanata while he took control of the ship, plugging new coordinates into the navigation computer. R0-GR and the others were unaware of what caused this, unbeknownst to them, Graballa the Hutt has taken control of the Clone Wars era droid from a crashed Lucrehulk-class Battleship on Ord Tellarom.[2]

Roger, R0-GR

Ka-Pao and Freemaker grabbed a hold of the controlled droid in an attempt to halt his actions but R0-GR brought the tug to a stop, launching the others to the front of the ship and preventing them from stopping him. While approaching the planet, they once again attempted to stop R0-GR to no avail with Ka-Pao pulling the droids arm.
