"Sure, he'll get here. I just hope we'll be here long enough to see him!"
―Hugh Sion, to Kazuda Xiono on meeting Poe Dameron[1]

Hugh Sion was a human male military pilot who served the New Republic in the years following the conclusion of the Galactic Civil War. Sion served in the starfighter corps of the New Republic Defense Force during the Cold War, flying a T-85 X-wing. He later joined the Resistance, flying a T-70 X-wing in Jade Squadron.

In 34 ABY,[5] during the Cold War between the First Order and the New Republic and its allies, the human Hugh Sion served as the pilot of a T-85 X-wing starfighter in the New Republic Defense Force's Starfighter Corps.[1] He,[3] along with fellow pilots Kazuda Xiono and Mia Gabon, was sent on a mission to rendezvous with Commander Poe Dameron of the Resistance to deliver intelligence.[1]

However, after arriving at the rendezvous point, the three pilots were ambushed by Major Elrik Vonreg of the First Order, and Sion and Gabon were concerned that the mission would fail. Xiono ordered the two pilots to flee into hyperspace while he covered them.[1] Following Sion and Gabon's jump to hyperspace, Xiono's starfighter was struck by Vonreg, but the pilot was saved by Commander Dameron. Rather than returning to base, Xiono opted to join the Resistance,[1] causing Sion and Gabon to assume the worst.[4]

"Hugh! Buddy! Oh, I can't believe it! You're a pilot for the Resistance now?"
"Yeah, sure am, if you can believe that.

Sion himself later joined the Resistance during the First Order-Resistance War, flying a T-70 X-wing starfighter for Jade Squadron under Commander Venisa Doza. Doza's husband, Captain Imanuel Doza of the Colossus, allowed them to travel to the supertanker fuel depot for a mission to escort Resistance recruits off the First Order-controlled planet Dantooine. Once aboard, Sion was reunited with Xiono when he spotted Xiono admiring the carbon scoring on his fighter. Sion introduced his former wingmate to fellow Jade Squadron member Norath Kev, who proceeded to explain that the squadron had been searching the galaxy for allies to stand against the First Order with mixed results, and with several members lost.[4]

After Captain Doza agreed to allow the squadron to temporarily house the Resistance recruits on the Colossus, Xiono and Torra Doza, daughter of Venisa and Imanuel, volunteered to assist with the mission. Venisa then recruited ace pilot Hype Fazon, who joined the squadron for a briefing in the Aces' Lounge, taking Sion's seat as he left to express his annoyance with Fazon's personality to Xiono. Venisa conducted her briefing, explaining the mission objectives: sneak onto Dantooine, evacuate the Resistance recruits, and avoid detection by the First Order. The pilots then proceeded to their fighters and left the Colossus for Dantooine.[4]

Upon approach to Dantooine, Sion explained to the rest of Jade Squadron that Xiono had nearly been thrown out of the New Republic Military Academy multiple times. Shortly after, the squadron was attacked by a scouting party of TIE/fo space superiority fighters. Commander Doza ordered their communications jammed, and Jade Squadron split into pairs. After defeating the entire scouting party, Venisa contacted the Resistance recruits on-planet and the transports launched.[4]

As the squadron was escorting the convoy through Dantooine's atmosphere, the Resurgent-class Star Destroyer[4] Thunderer,[6] which had been alerted to Resistance activity on the planet, arrived. As the First Order forces—including Tamara Ryvora and Jace Rucklin,[4] both former residents of the Colossus[7]—approached, Venisa ordered Sion and Xiono to flank the enemy while she hit them head on. During the dogfight, Ryvora trailed Xiono, but Sion was able to damage her fighter, causing her to lose Xiono. Rucklin managed to take out one of the transports, but the remaining two escaped into hyperspace along with Jade Squadron. Upon returning to the Colossus, Sion conversed with Fazon, the other Aces, and a group of recruits.[4]

Later that same year, the Colossus traveled to the Barabesh system while evading the First Order. Shortly after, Xiono and the mechanic Jarek Yeager attempted a rescue of Ryvora after she expressed wanting to leave the First Order and return to the Colossus. The rescue attempt initially failed, however, and the trio was brought aboard the Thunderer, which headed to the Barabesh system to destroy the Colossus.[6] Imanuel gathered the denizens of the supertanker, including Sion, in Aunt Z's Tavern and pled with them to fight the First Order. Upon watching a hologram of Xiono and Ryvora begging them to flee, Sion and the rest of the citizens of the Colossus were moved to fight the First Order.[8]

After the Thunderer arrived in the system, Jade Squadron, along with the Colossus's own Ace Squadron, launched to defend the tanker and successfully blew up Commander Pyre's and Agent Tierny's Star Destroyer. Sion survived the battle and rejoined with Kaz and others at Aunt Z's Tavern, celebrating their victory over the First Order.[8]

Personality and traits

"Uh, what about you? I mean, last I saw, you were facing off against the red TIE, and...we assumed the worst."
―Hugh Sion, to Kazuda Xiono[4]

Sion was a male[2] human with blue eyes, light skin, and brown hair. When Xiono failed to return to base after their mission to rendezvous with Dameron, Sion assumed the worst had happened. Sion also expressed annoyance when Fazon joined Jade Squadron in the Aces' Lounge and passively boasted about his piloting skills. During the flight to Dantooine, the pilot told the rest of the squadron Xiono had nearly been expelled from the Academy multiple times, finding humor in the story.[4]

Equipment

―Hugh Sion, to Kazuda Xiono in jest[4]

Sion flew a blue New Republic T-85 X-wing starfighter on his mission to rendezvous with Commander Dameron. While flying the X-wing, he wore a blue New Republic flight suit with the Sigil of the New Republic on the left shoulder and a helmet with a polarizing visor attached via a breathing tube.[1] As a pilot of Jade Squadron, Sion flew a gray Resistance T-70 X-wing starfighter with blue markings that was scarred with carbon scoring, and he wore an orange Resistance flight suit with a white and gray helmet with green markings and a green Rebel Alliance starbird; black gloves, shoes, and belt; and a white flak vest.[4]
